SCAA to Host Keynote Panel at Clean Waterways

SCAA will be hosting the Keynote Panel Session at the upcoming Clean Waterways Conference in Cincinnati on April 10th. The session will focus on EPA’s proposed rule for “Clean Water Act Hazardous Substance Worst Case Discharge Planning Regulations”. Visit here for more information and we hope to see you there!

SCAA at IOSC

SCAA has been working with Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) representatives on a Mechanical Recovery Display and Demonstration at the upcoming International Oil Spill Conference (IOSC) in New Orleans. Several SCAA member companies will be participating in displaying their technology and products.

Spill Response + Recovery: 2024 Update

Recently, the Technology Advancement Committee had the pleasure of contributing to a recent article in the Pacific Maritime Magazine. In the article, President Angie Martin, PE with Heritage Environmental Services and other member companies Rapid Response Systems' John Bradley and Moran Environmental Recovery, LLC's Geoffrey Taylor highlighted emerging tactics and technology, and spoke about some of the new methods being implemented by members of our association. US EPA Dispersant Regulations Update

In October 2023, member association API was represented by Tim Steffek as he presented “U.S. EPA Dispersant Regulations Update: Dispersant Listing and Use Authorization” at the Industry Technical Advisory Committee (ITAC) in Southampton, UK. The presentation provided an update on U.S. EPA dispersant regulations, including product listing and use authorization, testing requirements, and concerns regarding authorization and product listing.

Winter Oil Recovery Tactical Guide

API announces the "Winter Oil Spill Recovery Tactical Guidance Document: Best Practice Guidelines for Preparedness and Response for Inland Frozen Waterways". This guide contains a set of operational checklists, tools, and references to assist in inland winter spill response for oil releases. The decision to pursue on-ice response should be made early in an incident, should consider responder safety and feasibility of implementation, and should include guidance from incident command to make best use of windows of opportunity.

Committee Updates

Future Environmental Leaders (FEL) Committee

The FEL is in the process of designing a new Environmental Excellence Scholarship Program for College and Technical School Students, as a means to driving greater awareness and interest in the environmental field.

Membership Committee

The Membership Committee is busy re-designing SCAA’s Welcome Packages and an Orientation Program in an effort to do a better job of “on-boarding” new members to SCAA. Look for these to be rolled out in the coming weeks!

Safety Committee

Our Safety Committee is in the process of developing a half-day SCAA Safety Officer training program, which will be held in conjunction with the 2024 Clean Gulf Conference in Houston, TX. Stay tuned for more details!

SCAA and UK & Ireland Spill Association

SCAA has been working with the UK & Ireland Spill Association to organize a joint meeting during the International Oil Spill conference (IOSC). The purpose of the meeting will be to drive greater collaboration and recognition of mutual challenges facing the response industry worldwide.

USCG Western Alaska Oil Spill Planning Criteria Program

SCAA recently provided public comments to the United States Coast Guard’s Request for Information on the Implementation of a Western Alaska Oil Spill Planning Criteria Program. Although specific to Western Alaska, the program has overall implications to SCAA membership, National Planning Criteria and the OSRO classification program. Several SCAA member companies also provided public comments on this matter, all of which can be viewed 

April API-SAG Meeting

SCAA will be attending the American Petroleum Institute’s Spill Advisory Group (API-SAG) meeting in Washington, DC on April 17th. The following day, SCAA will be participating in a workgroup consisting of API members, Industry and Association of Petroleum Industry Cooperatives (APICOM) along with EPA and USCG to discuss the implementation of dispersant rules under Subpart J of the National Contingency Plan (NCP).
