NGCP National Webinar: STEAM Resources for Libraries

Libraries are instrumental in bringing high-quality STEAM experiences to their communities. Speakers from NASA's Universe of Learning, The National Citizen and Community Science Library Network, and Leap into Science, will share resources and opportunities to support STEAM programming at libraries. Participants will learn about digital interactives to inspire interest in astronomy and earth science, citizen science projects on wide-ranging topics, and impacts of engaging young children and families in STEAM and literacy.
MGM and NGCP Webinar: The M in STEM: Making Math Meaningful

This webinar, a partnership between NGCP and the Million Girls Moonshot, will focus on engaging and supporting youth in mathematics. Participants will learn from an AAAS IF/THEN® Ambassador who uses mathematics to positively impact society and share best practices and resources to help make the M in STEM meaningful and accessible in afterschool.

We can break down stereotypes about STEM and help young children, youth, and young adults strengthen their interest and identification with STEM. Learn about strategies and resources to foster conversation with diverse learners and break down stereotypes.

Juneteenth Essay Contest
To celebrate Black physicists and their contributions to the scientific community, Black in Physics, the American Institution of Physics, and NGCP invite Black and/or African American youth grades 6-8 to write an essay (1,000 words or less) about a Black physicist and how their contributions have shaped how youth see themselves represented in STEM. The winner, plus 2nd-5th place, will receive a cash prize. Submission deadline is May 22, 2022. Learn more.

Board of Directors Spotlight
Throughout 2022 we will be highlighting the work and passions of NGCP Board Members.

Andrea Brooke is the Senior Manager of the Employee Giving and Disaster Response team at Microsoft Philanthropies. Andrea has had the opportunity to create social impact at scale, including working with girls on computer science education, workforce development, expanding Microsoft's employee giving program, and most recently working on humanitarian aid. "The company moves fast and scales quickly, it provides an opportunity to create meaningful impact in many areas. I see myself as a system enabler." Andrea also shared her advise with the NGCP community, noting there is no substitution for an open conversation to share one's work and the challenges faced. The summit will focus on research-based strategies that facilitate systemic reform in computing classes and technical organizations, focused on improving diversity and equity. Intrepid Museum's Virtual Youth Summit: Transform Hope to Action
Online, June 11, 2022
Through hope and action, the summit will amplify diverse youth voices in science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) and civics. Youth ages 14-20 will have the opportunity to participate in diverse workshops, presentations, and panel sessions, including keynotes from Dr. Dominic J. Bednar and Danielle Boyer, with a dance party DJ, Leecy T. Register.
American Library Association Annual (ALA) Conference and Exhibition
Washington D.C., June 23-28, 2022
ALA brings together librarians and library staff, educators, authors, publishers, friends of libraries, and trustees. Participants will have access to educational programing, News You Can Use sessions, featuring research, innovations, advances in libraries, and the Library Marketplace exhibit hall. CSforALL Summit

The summit theme is “Game Changers in CS", exploring ways to shift the movement to ensure computer science is an equitable and sustainable part of the K-12 experience. With Memphis partner CodeCrew, the Summit will feature high-level conversations with national thought leaders highlighting strategies for equity, removing barriers to access, and building meaningful engagement for all students. Techbridge Girls Logo
On May 19, 2022, Techbridge Girls STEMConnect Panel is hosting a free virtual opportunity. Middle and high school-aged girls and gender-expansive youth will meet Techbridge Girls Role Models during this 1.5-hr panel. They will have the opportunity to ask questions about the role models' STEM journeys, and engage with other students who share a common interests.

Techbridge Girls challenges gender, racial, and class bias in STEM fields and culture by developing gender responsive and culturally relevant STEM curricula. They equip educators and STEM professionals and hold events for girls, including cis girls, trans youth, gender non-conforming, and/or non-binary youth who experience(d) girlhood and economic insecurity as a part of their journey.

Her Incredible Mind
Dedicated to the advancement of girls and women in STEAM, Her Incredible Mind is seeking women of color in STEAM-related fields to participate in recorded interviews about their experiences. Interviews will be featured on their YouTube channel to inspire girls and women to pursue STEAM-related careers.
National Week of Making
The National Week of Making (May 16-22, 2022) highlights the diversity of Makers, and is an opportunity for individuals to participate in Making activities locally while celebrating the innovation, ingenuity, and creativity of Makers.
  • MakerGirl educates the next generation of makers through online workshops for elementary and middle school girls focused on 3D printing and its diverse uses, such as 3D printing for coral reef preservation.
  • Makers + Mentors Network, a STEM initiative of Citizen Schools, partners with communities to build their capacity to uplift STEM mentoring and maker-centered learning to foster a stronger, more diverse workforce.
NCWIT Webinar Series: Advising for Future-Ready Careers
Counselors for Computing in partnership with Department of Defense STEM is hosting a webinar series (May 10, May 24, and June 1, 2022) for educators, parents/caregivers, and students focused on preparing youth for diverse and interdisciplinary careers in computing. The webinars will explore computational thinking in the finance industry, featuring women in leadership roles, as well as the intersection of computer science and health services to provide innovative solutions. Power On! Graphic Novel
This novel by Jean J. Ryoo and Jane Margolis with illustrations by Charis JB, explores how computing can be personally and politically empowering, centering on the lives of diverse high school students and rooted in CS equity research. The novel was written for and inspired by youth and educators. Learn more.
America After 3PM Logo
Special Report: Promoting Healthy Futures
This America After 3PM special report highlights the important role of afterschool programs in supporting youth's healthy development, while barriers related to lack of safe transportation and limited availability of programs persists. Key findings include an increase in overall prioritization of STEM learning in afterschool programming by families, as Black, Latino, and families with lower incomes ranked the importance of STEM learning opportunities in afterschool statistically higher than the national average.

Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD)

The purpose of GAAD is to get everyone talking, thinking, and learning about digital (web, software, mobile, etc.) access/inclusion and people with different disabilities. GAAD encourage designers, developers, usability professionals, and the general public to take an hour to experience first-hand the impact of digital accessibility (or lack thereof).
