At only 22, Teresa Jimenez is full of insight. It is an insight that she has cultivated from her own life experiences and observations. Her journey towards Urban Tilth began in 2009, the same year she was inspired by former Richmond High School teacher (and Urban Tilth board member) Jesse Kurtz-Nichol. Her involvement in the Richmond High garden opened up, as she says, "a world of alternatives." Having graduated from Urban Tilth's first Summer Apprentice Program in 2009, Teresa Jimenez has worked her way to now being the Technical Assistance
Project Manager. She is currently focused on assisting two churches- the Sojourner Truth Presbyterian Church and Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church in Richmond- build an urban garden.
"Honestly, I wasn't doing so good" says Teresa about her high school experience. "I was cutting a lot of school. The garden supported by the church's health ministry and Urban Tilth, is one of the sites in Urban Tilth's Faith Initiative project. "Churches already have a very strong group to take care of a garden, and base on each church's mission statement, with a garden they can accomplish their goal of proving people access to fresh produce," says Teresa Jimenez. Sojourner Truth Presbyterian Church is one of two garden sites involved in the Faith Initiative. The second church is Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church. Located behind Contra Costa College at 2621 Shane Drive, Sojourner Truth Presbyterian Church was founded in 1972. The church is predominantly an African American church with 97% of the congregation over the age of 65. The church was founded on the principal of advocating for those marginalized in society by racism, oppression, poverty and discrimination. Antoinette Francis Nixon, is the moderator over the health ministry and is a coordinator of the Sojourner Truth Presbyterian Church garden. "We are a prophetic church," says Nixon. "We do what Jesus would do: feeding the poor, and accepting of all."... READ MORE
