Registration Continues

Winter 2023 Registration open through Monday, January 2, 2023

Waitlists

If you are currently on a waitlist, we encourage you to also register for an open study group in case the waitlisted group does not become available.

  • If your waitlisted group does become available, we will reach out to you to determine if you want to switch.
  • If your waitlisted group does not become available, we are sure you will still have a wonderful experience this winter. Sometimes it’s the second or third choices that are pleasant surprises, as they broaden your interests and your circle of friends!
  • Remember OLLI study groups are kept relatively small to encourage a highly level of discussion and engagement.

The OLLI Anywhere 4-week Virtual Winter Term is:

  • Monday, January 9–Monday, February 6, 2023 (no study groups on MLK Day)

OLLI Stories

Building community one story at a time.

Most members agree that OLLI is so much more than lifelong learning — it is a community.

The shortest path between two people is a story. Use these stories to connect with others and as a starting point for conversation. Perhaps you will even see yourself in another’s story.

Heartwarming. Funny. Interesting. Poignant. Inspiring. You will find it all here.

Thanks to Elin Jacobson, OLLI VOLLI (volunteer) for interviewing Roberta and writing this OLLI Story.

Spring Co-Coordinators Needed For...

Canada's War of Independence—The War of 1812

In-person, Chicago

Americans tend to look at the War of 1812 as a second War of Independence from Great Britain; Canada views it as a War of Independence from the United States. Our text is Tecumseh and Brock: The War of 1812 by Canadian author James Laxer. Native American Tecumseh and British General Brock were the two leaders most responsible for Canada repelling multiple invasions from the United States.

Coordinator Howard Tanzman

Nimitz at War: Command Leadership from Pearl Harbor to Tokyo Bay

In-person, Chicago

What leadership qualities make a great commander? Nimitz at War: Command Leadership from Pearl Harbor to Tokyo Bay by naval historian Craig L. Symonds is a biography of Chester W. Nimitz, the greatest admiral in American history. Using this text, we will discuss Nimitz's deep strategic insight, his ability to develop talent, and his gift for knowing when and where to involve himself.

Coordinator Jim Smith

Classic Crime Cinema: Abductions, Hijackings, and Hostages

In-person, Chicago

We will examine the motives and mental states of criminals who commit kidnappings and hijackings. We will watch, discuss, and study films - some fictional, others depicting true incidents. Among the films to be discussed are: The Taking of Pelham 1-2-3, Dog Day Afternoon, United 93, Argo, Collateral, and Captain Phillips.

Coordinator Bill McGuffage

Modern Art’s Long Journey to America

In-person, Evanston

America’s hate-love relationship with modern art raged for 30 years, when anything smacking of the genre was despised. Picasso’s War, How Modern Art Came To America by Hugh Eakin helps us explore how a Manhattan lawyer, a wily art dealer, Museum of Modern Art director Albert Barr, Edith Rockefeller, and the great cubist himself convinced Americans to welcome art of the 20th century.

Coordinator Margot Wallace
