January 8, 2023 | The First Sunday after Epiphany

A word from John+

On this Twelfth Day of Christmas, I am still basking in the glow of our Christmas services here at Christ Church. More than 500 people joined us as we celebrated the light that shines through the darkness. Although it was frigid outside (and in the parish hall because, as these things go, our heater quit at the most inopportune time), warmth and joy could be felt throughout our community. Tomorrow is the Feast of the Epiphany, which is when we remember another story about a light shining through the darkness: this one involving the Magi following a star to meet Jesus.

In a world that can seem dark and in which you and I can do anything we want with our time, there is something incredibly powerful about coming together to celebrate our shared belief in the light. Although none of us know what this New Year will bring, may we hold fast to the truth that we are people of the light and have faith that no matter what darkness we encounter, the light will always shine and guide us closer to God.

Skidmore Family Support

Longtime member, Jesse Skidmore, was diagnosed with cardiac sarcoidosis two years ago, and suffered a heart attack in the early morning of December 28. Jesse is currently hospitalized in Winchester, Va., where they are treating him for an anoxic brain injury (lack of oxygen to the brain.) It is too soon to know the outcome with certainty, so Natalie, Sophie (12), Jack (10), and the whole family appreciate any and all prayers. If you'd like to support them with a meal or two, please add your name to this meal train*, set up by a family friend. (*the address is not listed for privacy reasons, so if you need it, please reach out to the office.)

Natalie is understandably focused on Jesse's care, so asks that you reach out instead to his sister, Erin, if you need to be in touch with the family directly.

Would you like to be baptized?

If you would like to be baptized (or you would like your child to be!), please reach out to John. We have scheduled one more date for baptism - February 12 - before the reflective season of Lent.

First Friday Book Group

Join us tomorrow - Friday, January 6 - to discuss this month's selection: A Children's Bible by Lydia Millet. In this short novel, the children are the realists while their parents live in a fantasy world as climate change disasters pile up. Join us via Zoom at 7 p.m. on January 6. Questions? Contact Sandy Hussey.

Outreach: Service to the Community

January Outreach Recipient

To celebrate the 100th apartment set up since GNCH began in 2016, all Outreach donations in January will go to Good Neighbors of Capitol Hill. We are thrilled to continue our support of this longtime partner! For more information on how to help GNCH in 2023, contact Lisa Nickerson or visit the Good Neighbors website.

Pancakes with the Stanikzai's!

From 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. next Saturday, January 14, please join us for breakfast honoring volunteers, donors, and friends of the Stanikzai's and other Afghan families we have served over the past year.  The co-hosted breakfast takes place at St. Mark's, and the CC+WP Men's Group will be flipping the pancakes & scrambling the eggs! (It is helpful, though not required, to RSVP to Kim Bayliss so we can be sure to flip enough 'cakes! She would also be happy to assign a task if you'd like to volunteer for the welcoming or clean-up crew.) This event is decidedly family friendly, and tweens/teens especially welcome to help entertain the Afghan children.

Donations and volunteers needed for arriving migrants

Coats, shoes, clothing, and blankets are needed in all sizes and for all genders. Bring new or lightly used items clean, bagged and labeled - by contents and sizes - to St. Mark's from Monday-Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. for distribution through the Migrant Solidarity Mutual Aid Network. Find out more about supporting migrants, or sign up to help sort donations.

Thank you!

A special thanks to Mike & Ann Grace for stepping up to deliver the lunches to the CCNV homeless shelter last week, and to Karen Wilson Román, Sandy Hussey, Eleanor Billington, and Barb & Del Crandall for preparing and delivering Sunday supper to the woman in Calvary's transitional housing program.

Save the Date!

Help celebrate the work of Good Neighbors Capitol Hill by attending a fundraising concert by Second String Orchestra on Saturday, January 28, 7:30 p.m. at St. Mark’s. The Orchestra includes talented string instrumentalists from our neighborhood, including several members of CC+WP, and will feature guest musician, Hamid Habibzadah, playing the tabla. Tickets can be purchased at the door or reserved by contacting GNCH ($20 per person or $40 per family is requested.) A reception will follow the concert in thanks to the community of friends and neighbors who have so generously supported GNCH's efforts.

Christmas Party for migrant families

CC+WP was thrilled to be able to donate $600 in support of the Ward 6 Mutual Aid Christmas Party for migrant families last month. Parishioners Lisa Nickerson, Nelson Rimensnyder and Mary Flowers shared that one highlight was witnessing the children's joy at seeing Santa and receiving wrapped gifts. The food table overflowed with homemade dishes from all around the world. CC+WP was honored to be part of the Diocesan team that made Christmas possible for these migrant families.
