Keep the right-of-way clear of temporary signs

Campaigning for the May election? Make sure your political signs are not in the public right-of-way on Washington County streets.

Illegally placed signs can block traffic signals and signs, drivers' line of sight and pedestrian access. Department of Land Use & Transportation crews will remove them. The problem is at its worst around election time, but garage sale, real estate and other signs are also illegal within the right-of-way year-round.

The public right-of-way includes ditches, shoulders and sidewalks. Areas between utility poles on both sides of the road is also usually inside the right-of-way. Signs attached to traffic signposts, streetlights or utility poles are illegal.

These rules apply only in unincorporated Washington County (areas not within a city).

For locations outside unincorporated Washington County, check with city officials for their requirements.

To request sign removal on Washington County roads/streets, email, submit a service request or call 503-846-7623.
