Public hearing for gas rate adjustments postponed
The first of two public hearings on proposed natural gas rate adjustments by the Department of Public Utilities (DPU) has been moved to the next Board of Public Utilities (BPU) work session on August 3. Originally scheduled for July 20 via Zoom, the hearing was postponed due to an Xfinity internet outage that affected residents and businesses throughout Los Alamos County. If the BPU approves the rate ordinance on August 3, a second hearing will be held on August 30 at the Los Alamos County Council meeting. The rates must be adopted by the County Council before they can be put in place.

The proposed increases are intended to generate revenues needed for current operations and to build cash reserves necessary for future infrastructure needs. Large increases in costs due to inflation and supply chain shortages have negatively impacted current natural gas fund balances. If approved by Council, the first increase will take effect on Oct. 1, 2022, with subsequent increases following on October 1 annually.

The natural gas rate schedule has been unaltered since 2016 when the fixed commodity rate was decreased from $0.29/therm to $0.23/therm. Prior to that, the fixed commodity rate decreased from $0.55/therm in 2013. A variable component based on the actual cost of gas, also known as the pass-through rate, is added to the fixed commodity rate each month. Service charges for natural gas have not been changed since 2009.

More information about the proposed rates, including a detailed FAQ document, can be found online at: https://ladpu.com/rates under the folder “Proposed & Pending Rate Changes.”

News
Pavement preservation at airport to resume
Pavement preservation work at the airport is scheduled to resume the week of July 25th. The airport will be closed beginning at noon on Monday, July 25th to accommodate morning flights. The duration of the closure is weather dependent and if conditions are favorable, work is scheduled to be complete by or before the end of the week. Rotary wing aircraft operations will be allowed during the closure.

Geoff Rodgers, Airport Manager will be overseeing this pavement preservation project. Rodgers states, “crews suspended work during the latter part of June and early July due to the heavy monsoon rainfall events. With dryer forecasts, this important maintenance operation to preserve the runway, taxiways, and tarmac will help keep the airport in good working order. He further adds, “closing the Airport will allow the contractor to work simultaneously on all areas of the project and shorten the time needed for closure…if work proceeds ahead of schedule, the airport will be reopened as soon as it is safe to do so.

Contact the Airport Manager, Geoff Rodgers, for any questions at 505.662.8420

Residents receive free disposal at the Eco Station and Overlook Collection Center on Saturday, August 20 by showing proof of Los Alamos County residency. Join us in our effort to make Los Alamos environmentally and eco-friendly by collecting litter and beautifying our community.

Last year, 164 participants collected trash and brush around the Los Alamos and White Rock community. The Eco Station and Overlook Collection Center collected approximately 19.8 tons of solid waste and 185 residents utilized free disposal day.

Environmental Services, Environmental Sustainability Board and Zero Waste Los Alamos would like to thank our generous sponsors: Enterprise Bank & Trust, Zia Credit Union, Coca-Cola of Santa Fe, and Los Alamos County.
A portion of the White Rock Visitors Center parking lot will be closed next week (July 25-29), to prepare the area for the installation of the County’s first Level 3 DC fast charger for electric vehicles.

While the 65 kW charger has not yet been delivered and will be installed at a later date, a Department of Public Utilities (DPU) contractor will be trenching in the parking lot to install electrical conduits and placing a concrete pad in preparation for the charger installation.
This is the first Level 3 charger in Los Alamos County, and currently, there are two Level 2 charge ports at the White Rock Town Hall and six at the Los Alamos County Municipal Building. A second Level 3 charger will be installed at the municipal building. DPU received grant funding to procure and install the Level 3 chargers.
