May 20, 2021

Dear Park Spanish Immersion Elementary School Community:

I hope that you are well! I am so grateful for our teachers and staff as they continue to find innovative and fun ways to help students learn. I have seen more classes learning outside than ever, and I have seen students craving those opportunities to enjoy the sunshine!

As we are approaching the end of the school year, we have many details to help us end and celebrate this year of working together on behalf of our children and our larger community. Please familiarize yourself with the information below, and as always, please let us know if you have any questions.

Most sincerely,

District-Owned Device/Electronics Collection
Instructional planning for the 2021-2022 school year is underway. The collection of school-issued Chromebooks, iPads and mobile hotspots and associated chargers prior to the last day of school is essential to ensure digital tools are available for learning at the start of next school year.

In-person families: If your child has not already done so and if they were issued a school device (chromebook or iPad), send it to school on Monday, May 17. Don't forget the charger! Students will still be devices at school, but they will not be bringing them home. We are starting the inventory process to ensure that we will have devices in the fall.

DLA families: You will need to bring your child's device and charger on Thursday, June 10 between 9:15 and 11:30 to the office at Door 1. If this timing does not work for you or you don't have transportation, please email vandewalker.sara@slpschools.org

From Health Services... Students and Water Bottles
Please send a water bottle daily (labeled with your child's name) so they can refill it as needed.

Drinking enough water every day is good for overall health. As plain drinking water has zero calories, it can also help with managing body weight and reducing caloric intake when substituted for drinks with calories, like regular soda.1-3 Drinking water can prevent dehydration, a condition that can cause unclear thinking, mood change, the body to overheat, constipation, and kidney stones4,5

Adults and youth should consume water every day.
  • Daily fluid intake (total water) is defined as the amount of water consumed from foods, plain drinking water, and other beverages. Daily fluid intake recommendations vary by age, sex, pregnancy, and breastfeeding status.6
  • Although there is no recommendation for how much plain water adults and youth should drink daily, there are recommendations for daily total water intake that can be obtained from a variety of beverages and foods.
  • Although daily fluid intake can come from food and beverages, plain drinking water is one good way of getting fluids as it has zero calories.

District Announces Finalists for Aquila Elementary School Principal Position
St. Louis Park Public Schools is pleased to announce two finalists for the position of Aquila Elementary School Principal. María Graver and Dr. Margaret J. Vecchio-Smith advanced to the final round of the interview process.

"Both candidates are well-qualified and prepared to lead for racial equity transformation in St. Louis Park Public Schools,” said Superintendent Astein Osei. “The finalists have shown that they care deeply about students, families, and staff, and that their skill sets align with the challenges facing our organization.”

The final round of the process will involve an interview with Superintendent Osei. The Superintendent will select one of the two candidates for the position and share his recommendation at the June 14 School Board meeting. The new principal will begin their duties on July 1, 2021.

About the finalists...

María Graver is currently the Assistant Principal at Richfield High School. She also works as an Educational Equity Coordinator for Minneapolis Public Schools and is a consultant for the Hackman Consulting Group where she develops and delivers curriculum promoting racial equity and social justice for educational and corporate entities. Graver holds an Educational Specialist degree from Concordia University - St. Paul, MN; a Certificate of Critical Literacy from the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities; a Master’s Degree in Instruction from Roosevelt University - Chicago, IL; and a Bachelor’s Degree in American Studies from Carleton College - Northfield, MN.

She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Government and Education & Child Studies from Smith College, Northampton, MA.

Shelley Nielsen currently serves as Aquila Elementary School Principal. She announced this Spring that she would be retiring at the end of the 2020-21 school year.
Mask Update for Families
Governor Walz announced that fully vaccinated individuals no longer have to wear a mask. Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) Commissioner Heather Mueller provided the following specific guidance for schools, “Through the end of the 2020-21 school year (last teacher contact day), masks must continue to be worn by everyone inside school buildings or on a school bus.”

The Minnesota Safe Learning Plan for 2020-21 and existing face covering guidance for schools and child care settings remain in effect until the end of the school year. Additionally, changes to the state’s pandemic mitigation protocols are being made. We will share additional information as it is released.

Thank you for your continued understanding as well as the support of students, staff and the greater community as we work together to keep our schools safe.
