IN-PERSON WORSHIP
We have spent a long time in the tomb of COVID-19. So many of you have asked, when will be able to worship in person? I am glad to be able to share with you that Bishop Rice and the leadership of the diocese have laid out a road map that leads to in-person worship. Of course, every road made is predicated on the condition of the road. With that said, if the current pandemic trends continue downward Holy Week will look something like this:

  • Palm Sunday – Outdoor, In-Person Liturgy of the Palms and the reading of the Passion and the blessing of the Chrism.
  • Holy Week Monday – Virtual Compline
  • Holy Week Tuesday – Virtual Renewal of Ordination Vows
  • Holy Week Wednesday – Virtual Tenebrae
  • Maundy Thursday – Virtual Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and Virtual Stripping of the Altar
  • Good Friday – Outdoor, In-Person Stations of the Cross
  • Holy Saturday – Virtual Holy Saturday Liturgy of the Word
  • The Great Easter Vigil (in part) will be a virtual liturgy
  • Easter Sunday – 10:00 am In-person bilingual Holy Eucharist to be celebrated in Zoe Eden Hall (Reservations are required as capacity is limited to 100)
  • Easter Sunday – 6:30 pm In-Person bilingual Holy Eucharist to be celebrated in Zoe Eden Hall (Reservations are required as capacity is limited to 100).

This schedule is dependent on where we are with COVID-19 in Fresno County and all COVID-19 safety precautions are mandatory. Look for specifics in next week’s Midweek Missive.
SUNDAY SCHOOL LENT MISSION PROJECT FOR HEIFER PROJECT INTERNATIONAL
Let's Learn About Goats!
So it was a goat who discovered coffee?? According to our video, yes! God’s creatures are amazing! Every animal Heifer Project provides to subsistence family farmers is selected to address the specific context of the farmers who receive them. Environmental sustainability and economic success go hand in hand. Where the land won’t support a heifer, it may well support a goat who, as our video demonstrates, is open to eating virtually anything! Appropriate animal technology is as essential to a farm family’s economic success as appropriate hardware technology such as solar powered windmills for pumping water from wells. This way HPI is able to change the lives of many more families for the better.

Our Sunday School children are so excited about naming their Heifer! They select the name this coming Sunday, March 14. We will let you know next week! The Sunday School goal to fully subscribe a Heifer is $500. So our diocesan goal is to see if we can Fill the Ark either by subscribing one of each kind of animal for $500 or by fully subscribing each animal for $5,000! To date, St. James has contributed $150. Remember, the opportunity to participate runs through Sunday May 16.

You too can join our children in giving impoverished families the gift of hope and what they need for an improved future. HPI is the gift of life in Christ’s name!

If you would like to donate to this ministry, please mail or drop off a check to St. James Cathedral with a memo note: "For Heifer Project International" so that we can distribute donations appropriately. If you donate on our website linked below, please indicate in the description "For HPI". Thank you!
FRESNO INTERFAITH SCHOLAR WEEKEND
ISW 2021 Webinar Series
"Bearing Witness from Fresno's Mason-Dixon Line"

Join us for six interfaith conversations every Monday, as we consider what it means to "Bear Witness" to Fresno's history of racism and redlining.

Date: Every Monday, February 15 - March 22, 2021
Time: 4 p.m. PST
Location: Zoom

Registration on Eventbrite is coming. All sessions are free and will be recorded. For more information, visit their homepage.

WEEK 1: OPENING PANEL, 90 Minutes
Moderated by Andrew Fiala, PhD, Director of the Ethics Center, Fresno State University

Guest Scholars:
Malik Simba, PhD, Professor Emeritus of History and Africana Studies, Fresno State University
Nathan Hensley, PhD, Associate Professor of English, Georgetown University, Washington, D.C.
Uziel Jimenez, Antiracist Educator, Co-founder Fresno Ethnic Studies Coalition

Each of our three guest scholars has made an important contribution to the study of racism and redlining in Fresno. Speaking from different vantage points, life experiences, and scholarly pursuits, they ask what it means to bear witness, and who gets to tell their story.

WEEK 2-5 BOOK STUDY, 60 Minutes
Representatives from four faith traditions and respondents take a deep dive into Eddie S. Glaude Jr.'s best-selling book, Begin Again: James Baldwin's America and Its Urgent Lessons for Our Own.

WEEK 6: CLOSING ROUNDTABLE, 90 Minutes
Our three guest scholars return for a powerful discussion with four interfaith speakers on lessons learned and the urgent questions we must ask in order to call forth a new America in our communities.

EAT PLANT-BASED MEALS WITH LOCAL INGREDIENTS
IMAGE COURTESY OF FORKS OVER KNIVES
Check out some tasty and healthy options that do not include meat! Also reduce your footprint by using ingredients from local farms. If it is local, it did not have to travel long distances and use as much energy to get to you.
DIGITAL COFFEE - SUNDAYS AT 11AM
To participate, log into the Cathedral Coffee Hour on Zoom. The meeting password is "james4147". You can also join the conversation by phone. Call (669) 900-6833 and enter the meeting ID 821-8772-3828. You will be prompted to enter the phone password "492292".
PASTORAL CARE
The clergy of St. James remain deeply committed to offering pastoral care and support to members of the Cathedral Congregation especially during this difficult time. If a pastoral need arises for you or someone you know in the congregation, and you want to contact the clergy, please either email us at clergy@stjamesfresno.org or call the Cathedral office at (559) 439-5011 and select option 5 to leave a message for the clergy.
DIOCESAN CYCLE OF PRAYER
This week we lift up in our prayers St. Raphael's, Oakhurst.
One of the great moments in 11-year-old Arri Davila’s life was hearing prayers of thanksgiving for the beauty of dreadlocks – hair like hers – at St. Ambrose Episcopal Church in Raleigh, North Carolina.
When Heather Zimmerman visited St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 2019, she spotted vegetable boxes “wedged in between some cemetery stones,” she recently told Episcopal News Service.
Organizers describe it as The Episcopal Church’s biggest annual annual gathering. It’s about to get even bigger. The CEEP Network typically gathers hundreds of attendees in a U.S. city for its annual conference, but because of the COVID-19 pandemic, it was forced to move online...
The church property at 4301 Meadowbrook Drive on the east side of Fort Worth, Texas, has long been a hub of Episcopal activity, even during the COVID-19 pandemic. St. Luke’s in the Meadow, a congregation of about a hundred members, has worshipped there since 1948.
If you have any feedback, comments, or questions for the Midweek Missive Editors, please email us. Submissions to the Midweek Missive are welcomed and must be submitted to midweek@stjamesfresno.org by Tuesday at noon.
