🤗Specialized Medical Equipment: Helping New Brunswickers Breathe Easier💝

Many New Brunswickers are living with lung conditions that require expensive specialized medical equipment as part of their care. Unfortunately, the reality is that many people cannot afford these life-changing pieces of equipment. A CPAP machine, for example, can cost between $3,000 - $6,000.

In the past year, our Equipment Lending Program has given out 11 CPAP machines to people in need. We have also donated 7 portable oxygen concentrators to lung transplant patients travelling to Toronto and Montreal for their treatments.

We have a small supply of O2 concentrators and CPAP machines ready to help New Brunswickers, but we are always looking for more. If you, or someone you know, has a lightly used CPAP machine (less than 5 years old), please consider donating it to NB Lung through our equipment lending program.

🫁Upcoming Atlantic Air Quality Workshop - Save the Date🤝

NB Lung is proud to announce that we will be hosting the 2024 Atlantic Air Quality and Health Workshop on Monday, February 12 in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.

Funded by Health Canada, this free one-day event is open to members of the public with stakeholders from diverse academic, healthcare, nonprofit, and government (federal, provincial, and municipal) sectors across all four Atlantic provinces. Attendees are welcome either in person at the Courtyard by Marriott Halifax Dartmouth, or online through Zoom.

The workshop will include a number of presentations by subject matter experts on topics related to indoor and outdoor air quality, human health, and the health impacts of climate change in the Atlantic region. There will also be time for breakout rooms and Q&A sessions so that attendees can take a deeper dive into the presentation topics.

Some of the subjects being covered are: Wildfires and air quality in Canada and the Atlantic region; Indoor air pollution as a risk factor for chronic disease; Air quality on school buses; Radon testing and mitigation, and much more!

Visit our website to learn more and secure your spot at the workshop!

📣We need your Voice! EV Impressions Survey🚗

NB Lung wants to encourage Atlantic Canadians to consider purchasing electric vehicles (EV) rather than gasoline and diesel-based cars. Our goal is to improve air quality by significantly decreasing the number of gas-powered vehicles on the road in Atlantic Canada.

New Brunswick saw a 67% increase in EV purchases in the 2023, thanks in part to provincial and federal rebates, shifting attitudes towards EVs, availability, and the award-winning efforts of our Drive Electric Atlantic program.

To help encourage Atlantic Canadians to "Drive Electric", we need your help to understand the current awareness, motivations and vehicle needs of Atlantic Canadians.

Follow this link to take our survey. You can choose to remain anonymous if you’d like, but if you leave your contact information you will be entered into a draw for a Canadian Tire gift certificate. Please share our survey far and wide, particularly among people who do not already own an EV.

You can learn more about rebates and Drive Electric Atlantic on the project website.

🤗A New Year's Resolution: Healthy Lungs, Healthy You💝

Quitting Smoking is the best single thing you can do for your health; the benefits of quitting start almost immediately and only get better over time. In just a matter of weeks, the risk of heart disease, stroke, lung disease, and various cancers decreases significantly.

We know that quitting isn’t easy, so we’ve come up with a list of tips and resources available for free to all New Brunswickers. Here’s to a New Year and a healthier you!

Here are some quick tips to set you up for success.

1) Pick a Quit Day: Pick a day, any day, that works for you. Mark it on your calendar and tell your loved ones you’re quitting. Setting a date and sticking to it is the first step towards quitting.

2) Choose your Support: Find a quit-smoking support line, research Nicotine Replacement Therapies (NRTs), or consider quitting with a friend. Knowing your supports before your start will help set you up for success.

3) On Your Quit Day: Toss your cigarettes / vapes, avoid situations that might tempt you to smoke, know that once your withdrawal symptoms pass you’ll feel better than you have in years! Again, tell your friends and family you’re quitting.

4) Dealing with Withdrawal: Remember The Four D’s of Dealing with Withdrawal: Drink water, Deep Breaths, Delay (just wait it out, your cravings will pass), Do something different (phone a friend, get some exercise, pick up a new hobby!)

The best way to Quit is the way that works for you - Find Quit Smoking / Vaping Resources available for free on our website!

"Approach the New Year with the resolve to find opportunities hidden in each new day."
