Watering Guidelines - How much?
|
Summer has finally arrived which means your newly planted trees and shrubs will require a consistent watering schedule! Not sure how much or how often to water? Here is our
Watering Guide
to help you out. One generally used formula for watering your new tree is 10 gallons of water per week for every caliper inch.
Other helpful products are:
- Soil Moist - stores 200 times its weight in water and releases as the plant's soil dries out. Soil Moist granules can be added to baskets, beds, gardens and turf!
- Hydretain - manages soil moisture, extending watering intervals for ornamental plants, turf grasses, trees, shrubs, and agriculture by as much as 2 to 3 times.
- Treegator® bags - these bags help distribute a slow drip so water is delivered to the root ball while minimizing run off.
|
Summer garden need a boost?
|
- Keep your garden growing by succession sowing crops like beets, lettuce, carrots, bush beans, and basil every few weeks to keep new, fresh harvests coming.
- DON'T FORGET! Start planting your pumpkin seeds now for a harvest this fall!
- Fertilize plants that look they need a boost. Liquid fertilizers are absorbed more quickly than granular types, and you will see a faster response. It is a good idea to feed your garden once or twice a month.
- Provide ample water during the summer. Watering the soil, not the plant foliage will help prevent the spread of fungus or other diseases.
- Harvest frequently. Harvest fruiting plants like beans, tomatoes, or peppers so they reinvest their energy into creating more flowers and fruits.
- Mulch beds to keep roots more evenly moist to help prevent issues like blossom end rot and drought stress.

July Maintenance Guidelines
-
Mulch around your plants to aid in moisture control! We have many choices of premium mulches to choose from.
-
-
Apply SEDGEHAMMER Turf Herbicide to eliminate yellow and purple nutsedge.
-
Post-emergent control of crabgrass and summer annual grasses is best performed on young plants using ferti-lome's Weed Out with Crabgrass Killer. This product kills Crabgrass, Dandelion, Clover, plus 200 other listed weeds.
-
Meet water requirements of turf. Mowing heights for cool-season turf grass should be 3" during hot, dry summer months. Gradually raise mowing height of bermuda grass lawns from 1 1/2 to 2 inches.
-
Fertilize warm season grasses using Marcum's Slow Release 18-6-12 Fertilizer or our 31-0-0 for faster results. Make sure to water at least a 1/2 inch (or approximately 30 minutes with a sprinkler) after applying fertilizer.
-
Watch for signs of spider mites. Foliage may become pale and speckled; juniper foliage turns a pale yellowish color. Shake a branch over white paper and watch for tiny specks that crawl.
-
-
-
Expect some leaf fall from newly planted trees. This can be a normal reaction to heat and drought. Follow Marcum's Watering Guidelines for newly planted trees and shrubs.
-
Divide and replant crowded hybrid iris (bearded iris) after flowering until August.
-
Revitalize your trees and shrubs with ferti-lome's Organic Fish Emulsion.
