Whole Learning:
Participation vs. Engagement
In the January 21st Laker, I shared some insights and research based concepts and strategies around the importance of homework completion for all learners. Yet, it is critical to realize that student learning cannot simply just stop there at the end of each academic day. The truth is that we all need to work together to take their learning to the next level and move from simple participation to active engagement!
Put simply, participation is experienced when students “do” the school experience each day. They show-up, attend class, go through the motions expected of them, and complete assignments, some at school and some at home. However, the idea of true engagement is rooted much deeper for all children.
In other words, true engagement takes place when students are interested in what they are learning and experience a sense of belonging. Furthermore, it exists when students have opportunities to establish positive relationships with teachers, peers, and other adults from whom they are learning. In fact, it is during this cycle of engagement that students personally become vested in learning as they then begin to seek more challenges and self-regulate the process of growth. They begin to plan, monitor their own progress, set goals, and problem solve. This extension of emotional engagement, known as “cognitive” engagement, is what we should desire for all of the children within our care. It is at this juncture where a growth mindset continues to flourish and positions them for success as young adults. Click here for some additional strategies and helpful tips that you and your children can utilize to assist all parties in this journey! Safe travels!

The Rapid Response Access Point, more commonly referred to as mobile crisis response, began 1-1-22 with very little fanfare.
Now, for 24/7 crisis support, someone simply calls the statewide Rapid Response Access Point number. This line provides over the phone support and problem solving by clinicians to help resolve a behavioral health crisis!
If the crisis cannot be resolved over the phone, a Mobile Crisis Response Team may be dispatched to wherever the individual is.
