Orange County leaders committed to free COVID tests and vaccines for those in need

For over 2 years now we have provided free COVID-19 tests to thousands of Orange County residents in need of Covid testing. Many of these individuals seek these free tests due to being uninsured and being able to go back to work to provide for their families. Most importantly, they test themselves to avoid spreading COVID-19 to their families. Although Federal dollars that were used to fund low-income and uninsured people to obtain these tests have expired, programs like ours plan to continue testing people for free. As said by Loreta Ruiz, Associate Director of the COVID-19 Response program, "We definitely need to give them access to this testing so we stop the virus. We do not want to get them saying, 'Well, if I need to pay the $140, or whatever the cost may be, then I'm just not going to get tested,' and then they're gonna get all the family sick. It's not a good idea right now to stop getting tested".

Ciclovia de Bogota

We followed Charis Galeas, Program Coordinator for CYE, on her journey to Bogota, Colombia.

We find Charis exploring cycling as part of the "Bogotá: World's Cycling Capital" project; she had the opportunity to enjoy Ciclovia last Sunday.

What is the Ciclovia?

The Ciclovia or "Bikeway" concept began in Bogota in the 1970s as a citizen protest against the city becoming far too car-focused. Each Sunday and holidays, from 7 am to 2 pm certain main streets of Bogotá, are temporarily blocked off to cars allowing runners, skaters, pedestrians, and bicyclists to workout in a more comfortable environment, it is estimated that between 1M to 2M people partake in Ciclovia on over 120 km of car-free streets, this idea has spread to cities around the world, such as Ottowa, Mexico City, and Paris.

Our outreach, education & advocacy work for pedestrian and bicycle safety began in our hometown of Santa Ana, CA in 2012.
