Thank you to OLLI Coordinators who proposed exciting study groups for the Spring 2023 semester | |
Co-coordinators are needed for the following Spring 2023 study groups:
Canada's War of Independence—The War of 1812
In-person, Chicago
Americans tend to look at the War of 1812 as a second War of Independence from Great Britain; Canada views it as a War of Independence from the United States. Our text is Tecumseh and Brock: The War of 1812 by Canadian author James Laxer. Native American Tecumseh and British General Brock were the two leaders most responsible for Canada repelling multiple invasions from the United States.
Coordinator Howard Tanzman
1948 War for Independence
Virtual
The 1948 War for Independence, also known as the first Arab-Israeli War, was the culmination of a political movement that arguably started in the late 19th century with the birth of the Zionism movement. We will gain insight into the causes of this war and study the political climate at the time. Our text will be 1948: A History of the First Arab-Israeli War by Benny Morris.
Coordinator Ken Yoshitani
Nimitz at War: Command Leadership from Pearl Harbor to Tokyo Bay
In-person, Chicago
What leadership qualities make a great commander? Nimitz at War: Command Leadership from Pearl Harbor to Tokyo Bay by naval historian Craig L. Symonds is a biography of Chester W. Nimitz, the greatest admiral in American history. Using this text, we will discuss Nimitz's deep strategic insight, his ability to develop talent, and his gift for knowing when and where to involve himself.
Coordinator Jim Smith
The Black Count: The True Story of a Hero, a Man, and the French Revolution
In-person, Chicago
Tom Reiss’ Pulitzer Prize winning biography The Black Count: Glory, Revolution, Betrayal, and the Real Count of Monte Cristo will guide our study of the extraordinary life of General Alex Dumas—a black man born on a Haitian sugar plantation, son of a French aristocrat and a slave mother—who became one of the greatest military leaders of the French Revolution.
Coordinator Ron Rifkin.
Modern Art’s Long Journey to America
In-person, Evanston
America’s hate-love relationship with modern art raged for 30 years, when anything smacking of the genre was despised. Picasso’s War, How Modern Art Came To America by Hugh Eakin helps us explore how a Manhattan lawyer, a wily art dealer, Museum of Modern Art director Albert Barr, Edith Rockefeller, and the great cubist himself convinced Americans to welcome art of the 20th century.
Coordinator Margot Wallace
It’s in the Action: Stories from Changemakers
In person, Evanston
What moves an individual to become involved in social activism? Read and discuss stories of ordinary people who leave the sidelines and become changemakers—to bend that arc of the moral universe towards justice—using the text The Moment: Changemakers on Why and How They Joined the Fight for Social Justice by Evanstonian Steve Fiffer.
Coordinator Suzanne Farrand
