Become an Advocate for Nature this Winter
Excessive road salt washes into our streams, kills our trees, and hurts our fish and wildlife. Water treatment plants are not equipped to filter out the extra salt, so it can end up in our tap water, too.

This winter, you can help protect Pennsylvania's Exceptional Value streams with ease. Sign the pledge with the Izaak Walton League--one of America’s oldest conservation organizations--and receive a free water testing kit to use next time you're near a stream. Take part in this national mission, and help spread awareness about salt!
Family forests (properties between 30 - 2,000 acres) collectively make up 39% of our nation's forests, but up until now have been almost entirely excluded from carbon markets. Now, the Family Forest Carbon Program (FFCP) partners with family forest owners to manage and improve forest health and reduce carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, providing the opportunity for landowners to play a vital role in the global environmental effort.

Do you own 10+ acres of forest? Map your property to find out if you're eligble for this program.
Even if you don't enroll, you can still use this tool to see what kinds of trees are on your property!
Select your own land plus neighboring parcels to reach a total higher acreage, then click
"get your free report" to read information about your surrounding forest species.

Keep an eye out for the Brodhead Watershed Association's article on the FFCP, coming out next month.

Pennsylvania is home to several owls including the great horned owl, barred owl, eastern screech owl, and the tiny northern saw whet owl. Join avian expert Jackie Speicher as we look for these elusive birds along the trails at Kurmes Nature Preserve. Dress for this event with layers of clothing for potentially cold winter weather, and a flashlight to help guide the way. While we can’t promise to see an owl, we can promise a fun evening of birding.

Pomeroy Nature Preserve (Stroudsburg)
We will be removing autumn olive near the meadow (next to Pomeroy’s new parking lot located at 675 Hickory Valley Road). This will involve cutting large autumn olive with a chainsaw, so bring your favorite ear protection if desired. We will have disposable ear plugs available as well.

Saturday, January 22nd | 9:00 am – 12:00 pm
Kurmes Nature Preserve (Cresco)
We will brave the cold to remove Japanese barberry and other invasive shrubs, continuing to make progress on an area where we have worked in the past.

Tuesday, February 1st | 9:00 am – 12:00 pm
Glen Run Nature Preserve (Stroudsburg)
We will continue our work of removing winged wahoo (aka burning bush) in the floodplain of this preserve. We will focus on large diameter individuals using a chainsaw. Ear protection is recommended.

Thursday, March 3rd | 9:00 am – 12:00 pm
Jonas Mountain Nature Preserve (Jonas/Effort)
We’ll be removing autumn olive and other invasive plants from this preserve.

Learn Preserve (Tannersville)
We’ll remove invasive shrubs and vines to make space for native species at this small but beautiful preserve along the Pocono Creek.

Sunday, April 24th | 9:00 am – 12:00 pm
