In this fast-paced course, you will cover topics such as risk management, basic rigging planning, loads on rigging, applications, inspections and much more. ARC Flash Awareness
July 13th – 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
This course introduces the student to the hazards of an arc flash event & how to set up an arc flash safety program based on the NFPA 70E “Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace”. Students will learn the factors affecting arc flash hazards, selection & use of PPE for arc flash protection & equipment labeling requirements. Click here for more info and to register.
OSHA 10-Hour for Construction
July 14th-15th – 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.
Gain a basic understanding of the hazards present in most construction projects. Identify, and then avoid, reduce, or eliminate job hazards and become more familiar with required record-keeping and MIOSHA enforcement procedures. Upon completion of the course, the student will receive an OSHA Construction Safety and Health 10-Hour course completion card. Click here for more info and to register.
First Aid, AED, CPR – Virtual
July 20 – 8:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.
This course teaches the principles of basic life support for adults. The course details “hands-only” CPR, first aid, choking in adults, signs, and symptoms of heart attack and stroke, and treatment for shock. CAM's Tiger Game Tailgate Takes Place on August 3rd
|
|
CAM members and their guests are invited to join us on Tuesday, August 3rd for another great CAM networking event! The evening kicks off at 5:00 p.m. with a pre-game tailgate party at the BSJZ Law Office at 1842 Michigan Avenue. The event includes a food truck and beverages, free parking, live broadcast of pre-game, shuttle service to Comerica Park (subject to COVID restrictions), ticket to Tigers vs. Boston Red Sox game.

Trench Safety Stand-Down Webinar Planned for June 15th

June 14th-18th is Trench Safety Stand-Down Week. MIOSHA is hosting a live webinar forum on June 15th from 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. with leaders from the construction industry to discuss excavation safety. CAM's own Tracey Alfonsi is a featured panel member. Join the Microsoft Teams live event HERE.

Building Connections Scholarship Now Accepting Applications
|
|
Funded by the proceeds of the Building Connections Networking Event, which supports the Boy Scouts of America Scouting program, the Building Connections Scholarship is a $1,000 a year, renewable scholarship to attend an accredited college, trade school, or university with a focus on building construction and design in some capacity. Applicants must be qualified and worthy graduating high school seniors or between the ages of 17-20 years of age. Selection will be made by a designated committee and will be announced at the annual Building Connections Event, normally held during the 3rd week in September each year. The National Safety Council Helps Keep Employees SAFER
|
|
As the push to get more people vaccinated against COVID-19 continues throughout the country, the National Safety Council's SAFER: Safe Actions for Employee Returns initiative aims to develop industry- and risk-specific resources and recommendations for employers. “You don’t want to go back to the office and pretend as if it doesn’t exist,” said John Dony, senior director, thought leadership, at the NSC. “You’re still going to need all the controls, from physical distancing to masks to redesign of work and everything in between, then assess your progress as you go.” Since its inception last year, SAFER has been a real-time resource for organizations of all sizes that have brought workers back onsite or are considering it. Registration is now open for the 2021 FGIA Virtual Summer Conference, which will be held June 22nd-24th. Keynote speaker Ken Gronbach, president of KGC Direct, will give a presentation entitled "Demographics Precipitate Economics: Profound Strategic Planning for the Post-Pandemic Era." MIOSHA Presents Updated COVID-19 Emergency Rules Webinar
|
|
Recently, Michigan COVID-19 Workplace Safety Director Sean Egan hosted a live webinar to discuss the updated MIOSHA Emergency Rules, which included workplace requirements to establish safe and healthy work environments. The rules take effect upon filing with the Secretary of State and remain in effect until October 14, 2021. Watch the webinar HERE and review the Powerpoint presentation HERE. John Marshall Harlan of Harlan Electric Company Has Passed
|
|
The Construction Association of Michigan regretfully announces the passing of John Marshall Harlan, past CAM Chairman of the Board, who died on May 22nd at the age of 87. John served as as president and CEO of the Southfield-based Harlan Electric Company from 1963 to 1995. The company was recognized by the Engineering News Record as the nation's 10th largest Electrical Contractor in 1995. The company has successfully completed hundreds of substation, transmission line and distribution system projects throughout the upper Midwest and northeastern United States for some 80 years.
As an outstanding leader in the Detroit business community, Harlan was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union; past director and president of the National Electrical Contractors Association, Southeastern Michigan Chapter; and past director of the Engineering Society of Detroit; in addition to holding other leadership roles in the industry. He wrote 19 industry papers and was a popular speaker at many electrical leadership conferences across the nation.
He began the Harlan Foundation to endow many schools and universities, including the University of Michigan, Lawrence Technological University, Ferris State University, Marygrove College, Wayne State University, University of Detroit Mercy, and others.
