Cosmetology and Barbering - NUSD adds 11th Career Technical Education Pathway
We're excited to share that we continue to provide options for students through our Career Technical Education Pathways with the launch of our 11th Pathway - Cosmetology and Barbering. The Board of Trustees approved our newest pathway that will provide high school students the foundational skills of Cosmetology and Barbering before enrolling in a cosmetology school after graduation to obtain their state license. NUSD will be the only district in the state to include barbering as an option for students. Exciting news for the students of NUSD!

Farwell Student Board Member Estefania, we'll miss you
The Board of Trustees bid farewell to Student Board Member Estefania Garcia and recognized her tremendous contribution to bringing the student perspective to the Board. Estefania, a graduating senior at Natomas High School, served during the 2020-2021 school year.
The Board commented on her growth throughout the term and the value she added as a student board member. Her parents beamed with pride in the audience as they heard the heartfelt comments about their daughter.
Upon graduation, Estefania will attend UC Davis in the fall in pursuit of becoming a dermatologist. Please join us in congratulating Estefania for serving out her term and for bringing the student voice to each board meeting. Thanks, Estefania, we'll miss you!

Want to learn more about our new virtual school option?
We continue to offer families an additional school option for the 2021-2022 school year with the brand new Larry G. Meeks Academy! The academy will allow students to engage in a virtual (online) instructional model for grades K-8 and a blended in-person/virtual instructional model for grades 9-12.
Please join us Saturday, May 15th at 10 a.m. for our final informational session to learn more about how the Academy will be different from distance learning, how your student can continue to participate in sports and band at their home school of residence for high school students, opportunities for field trips and learning adventures, Apple Technology Package for each student, and more.

NUSD Celebrates Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month
May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, which celebrates and honors the culture, traditions, history, and contributions of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders throughout the United States.
In celebration of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we are featuring a diverse range of perspectives through a social media campaign that highlights the importance of recognizing this month and the contributions of Asian American and Pacific Islanders to our community. Trustees Recognize 15 NUSD Retirees
The Board of Trustees honored and congratulated NUSD’s 15 retirees at Wednesday night’s board meeting totaling nearly 350 years of cumulative service. Their jobs ranged from teacher to custodian to food services assistant.

Natomas Schools Foundation raises $5,000 on Big Day of Giving
At the beginning of the month, we invited our community to participate in the Big Day of Giving, a 24-hour giving challenge to support non-profit organizations like the Natomas Schools Foundation to help fulfill their mission to support students.
We are thrilled to announce that for its very first year participating in the Big Day of Giving, the Natomas Schools Foundation raised a total of $5,000. The money will be used to support student's academic, artistic and athletic achievements. On behalf of the Natomas Schools Foundation, we want to thank everyone for their donation, and for making this day such a huge success.

Celebrating Our Teachers and Nurses
On Wednesday, May 12, 2021, we celebrated our teachers in honor of Day of the Teacher, and our school nurses in honor of National School Nurse Day. Staff received a bag of fresh fruit from local farmers, NUSD lanyard, and NUSD pen. “Classified School Employee Week” also occurs this month, from May 17-23. We will share how we celebrated them in the next's edition.
Members of the NUSD Management Team compiled two special videos to show their appreciation for all that our teachers and nurses do for our students and families. Please take a moment to watch them and join us in celebrating these committed, collaborative, caring, and exemplary employees.

Give it up for our very own School Hunger Hero Vince Caguin
Congratulations to Executive Director of Nutrition Services & Warehouse, Vince Caguin for being recognized by No Kid Hungry for his tireless commitment to food access and education equity in the 2020-2021 school year.
Vince and his team made sure throughout the pandemic that our students had access to food even throughout the weekend. Way to go, Vince! Thanks for your hard work and commitment to feeding our students. You truly are our Hunger Hero!
