From the Pastor...
...Jesus and Habits
To put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness...Ephesians 4:22-24
During the pandemic, I picked up a bad habit. I started to scroll on my phone often during the day. Many of the activities I enjoyed that took my time were gone due to social distancing, so I replaced them with another activity. I would pick up my phone while we watched television and scroll Facebook, or I would scroll the news before I went to bed, or I would scroll on Pinterest when I woke up in the morning. Scrolling was extremely easy and gave me a little dopamine hit my brain wanted. So, it became a habit. Now, that the pandemic is winding down, what will I do with this habit?
In her book, Badass Habits, Jen Sincero writes that habits are based upon our internal identity or in other words on how we see ourselves. If we see ourselves as the type of person who does an activity, then we will do that activity. The way we identify ourselves informs how we think, believe and then consequently behave. For example, if we first identify as a swimmer, then we will swim. When we are reconsidering a habit, it is important to look at who we believe we are.
As people who follow Jesus, our identity is in Christ. We are people who can live our life like Christ lived. What would your habit look like if Jesus were living in your skin? At our deepest level we are sacred beings, made in the image of God, and transformed by Christ. Our habits can reflect that identity. When habits take on a life of their own, we can visualize Christ in our skin and reflect on how that identity can transform our actions.
May you see yourself in Christ,
Warmly,
Pastor Anny

Godly Play
We will be using the Godly Play curriculum. We are so thankful to our congregation for helping support our ability to purchase the materials we needed. For those of you unfamiliar with Godly Play, here is a little bit about it:
|
|
|
"Godly Play offers a creative, child-honoring way of entering into and experiencing the biblical story. In Godly Play, we play with the language of God and God's People: our sacred stories, parables, liturgical actions and silence. Through this powerful language, through our wondering, through the community of players gathered together, we hear the deepest invitation of all: an invitation to come play with god."

Partners Join St. Augustine in Supporting
St. Luc Episcopal School Thomassique, Haiti
It is hard to imagine that school will be out for the summer soon, both here in Rocklin and in Haiti. The children at St. Luc are doing well, and class attendance is now back to pre-COVID enrollment levels.
But as sure as the school year ends, a new school year will begin. We have new partners who have joined our St. Augustine family in supporting the children, faculty and staff of St. Luc. Our relationship with The Rotary Club of Lincoln continues to grow and develop. They have given us another generous gift of $1,400 to help continue their support of water/hygiene and our meal program.
St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Westavia Hills, Alabama, in the Birmingham area, is proving to be a wonderful partner, and we have had Noralyn from their outreach team join our regular monthly meetings via Zoom. Our friends at St. Stephen’s are generously joining all of you in support of these beautiful children and their wonderful school.
Plans are even being discussed for a trip to St. Luc in Haiti shortly after Thanksgiving of this year.

Welcome Ministry
The Newcomers part of the Welcome Ministry will be taking the summer off and retooling to align with the Invite Welcome Connect guidelines set forth in the book being discussed in Pastor Anny’s Walk Talk series.
We have had a wonderful year and many of the newcomers to this group have joined various ministries at the church, such as Daughters of the King, acolytes, choir and greeters. We are grateful and blessed for their willingness to become a part of our community.
If you have not contacted me yet and are interested in becoming a part of our team, please let me know. We especially need a few good men and a young family to work with new members of the community starting in the fall.

Prayer Shawl Ministry
Soft, warm and full of love... a prayer shawl is a tangible token of the power of prayer. Prayer shawls are given to those needing a physical reminder of our love and concern in times of healing and stress.
Most of our knitting/crocheting is done at home, but we like to meet once a month at church for fellowship and to share ideas. We have not been meeting during the pandemic but would like to start again. Please contact Greer with a time that would be good for you. Saturday mornings were not working.
We have several shawls in inventory. Contact Pastor Anny or Greer Nave if you know of someone who might benefit from having one. If you would like to give one to someone not a member of St. Augustine, contact Greer . They are presented with a beautiful card of our own design and a selections from the Book of Common Prayer.
A couple of people have expressed an interest in learning to knit. If you are one of those, let me know... email me at gnave@aol.com.

The Gathering Inn Hosting Program
|
|
Over the past year, because of COVID-19 restrictions, we have modified how we provide a monthly meal to our homeless brothers and sisters at The Gathering Inn. With a limited number of volunteers and always using COVID-safe procedures, we prepare the food (Jack's famous barrel chicken and all the fixings) and send it off to be served at a church that is equipped to house our guests.
The meal always includes homemade desserts prepared by Rhonda Wampler and her team of bakers. We would like to develop a rotating team to assist with the baking. Please consider signing up for this very important ministry. A specific recipe is selected each month. With a large enough group of volunteers, you may be asked to bake only once per quarter. If you would like to be a part of the TGI bakers, contact Rhonda Wampler at rhondawampler5@gmail.com.
Please consider signing up for this very important ministry and continue to pray for those who are less fortunate.
