Fish Slough Petroglyphs

The Fish Slough Petroglyphs are located inside the Volcanic Tableland area of the Owens Valley just north of the town of Bishop. Fish Slough is a wetland at the mouth of the Owens River and is considered a critical environmental concern area. The petroglyphs are believed to have come from the ancestors of the Paiute Shoshone People who still inhabit the valley and are thought to be between 1000 and 8000 years old. The symbols are circles, grids, shields, and stick figures scattered amongst the dramatic stone formations that are excellent examples of volcanic history. 

Bristlecone Pine Forest

The Bristlecone Pine Forest is home to some of the oldest trees in the world, Bristlecone Pines. The Methuselah Grove is the location of the 4,854-year-old Bristlecone Pine called "Methuselah". It is known to be the world's oldest living non-clonal organism. The Schulman Grove and visitor center offers interpretive talks, natural history lectures, and hiking trails. The Patriarch Grove is home to the world's largest Bristlecone Pine and has self-guided trails.
