Smoke Management Guidebook for Prescribed Burning in the Southern Region
This guidebook was created through a collaboration between the Environmental Protection Agency, North Carolina State Extension Forestry, Southern Fire Exchange, Southern Regional Extension Forestry, and the University of Georgia Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources. The goal of the guidebook is to help southeastern U.S. landowners understand smoke management for prescribed burning and various techniques that can be used to help manage the smoke that is created by prescribed fire. NC Arbor Day 2021
Arbor Day is a day to recognize the benefits that trees give to our communities. Join us in celebrating NC's Arbor Day on March 19th. Project Learning Tree Workshops
2021's first Project Learning Tree workshops are coming up this month! These workshops are open to all educators with limited seats available. This year, the workshops will be held in a variety of formats including online and in-person meetings as well as asynchronous homework. Coming Events of Interest to Woodland Owners

March 4, 2021 (Th), 1-2 p.m. ET, North Carolina Forestry Association: Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Forestry. The North Carolina Forestry Association invites you to join them in a conversation about creating and growing a culture of diversity and inclusion in the field of forestry. Speakers will share their stories working with diverse teams, advise the next generation of young professionals, and highlight strategies businesses can adopt to build inclusivity in the workplace. Attendees are eligible for 1 hour of Category 1 CFE and 1 hour of Criteria III for the NC Environmental Education Certification Program. March 10, 2021 (W), 1-2:30 p.m. ET & March 12, 2021 (F), 1-4 p.m. ET, Project Learning Tree K-8 Hybrid Workshop @ McDowell Nature Center. Join other K-8 classroom and nonformal educators as we explore activities in the Project Learning Tree K-8 Curriculum Guide. This workshop has three components: (1) A virtual zoom workshop on March 10th from 1 pm to 2:30 pm. (2) An in-person workshop at McDowell Nature Center in Charlotte, NC on March 12th from 1 pm to 4 pm. (3) 1.5 hours of asynchronous, outside homework to be completed. The workshop fee is $20. March 11, 2021 (Th), 1 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. ET, ForestHER NC: Enjoying Your Woods Safely & Citizen Science Projects. Join ForestHER NC landowners, natural resource professionals, and others for the third of three interactive webinars about enjoying your woodlands! In this webinar, you will have an opportunity to learn about Citizen Science and how you can participate in it, as well as, enjoying your woods safely. Registration is required. March 24-26, 2021, 8:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. ET, Clemson Cooperative Extension: Forest and Tree Health Workshop. Join Clemson Extension and Dr. David Coyle for a 3-day workshop covering pine, hardwood, and invasive plant pests. Topics will include identification, biology/ecology, and pest management, focusing on insect and fungal pests in natural forests vs. single trees, including biocontrol and chemical control options. March 29 - April 10, 2021, Project Learning Tree K-8 Hybrid Workshop @ Agape Center for Environment Education. This workshop will take place in three parts, two of which will be virtual and on your own, and the cumulating in-person gathering at the Agape Center for EE near Fuquay-Varina on Saturday, April 10 from 9:30 am - 12:30 pm. March 29 - April 1, 2021, NC Forest Service: Certified Burner Training. NCFS's next Certified Burner course is planned for March 29 – April 1. Due to public health concerns, the class will be delivered both virtually and in small field groups. Virtual classroom instruction will be conducted Monday, March 29th and Tuesday, March 30th 8:30 am – 12:30 pm. The in-person field portion is scheduled rain or shine Thursday, April 1st 9 am –12 pm followed by a course review and test. This course costs $25. Seats are limited. April 16, 2021 (F), 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. ET, Project Learning Tree Environmental Experiences for Early Childhood Workshop. Join other early childhood educators as we explore activities in the Project Learning Tree Environmental Experiences for Early Childhood activity guide. This in-person workshop will take place at the NC Zoo in Asheboro, NC. The workshop fee is $20. Please register by April 9, 2021. Register now and find further details on the registration page. April 29, 2021 (Th), TBD, Women's Chainsaw Safety Workshop. This course will cover the basic elements of safe chainsaw operation. Topics will include parts of a chainsaw, personal protective equipment-including parts, proper fit, and importance, chainsaw maintenance, and chainsaw use. COVID-19 safety protocols will be followed.
