Winter 2022 | Weekly Updates for International Students @ UC San Diego
Dear Campus Colleagues,

As the International Students & Programs Office (ISPO) prepares to issue visa documents for our Fall 2022 newly-admitted international students, we want to take this opportunity to review important information and resources in order to support you in working with these students throughout what we call the “pre-arrival season” over the next several months.
Pre-Arrival Season Essentials
iPortal

Newly-admitted international students may begin their visa document requests via the iPortal (iPortal.ucsd.edu) starting March 1, 2022. Students should wait 24-48 hours after accepting their offer of admission before attempting to log in.

Funding Requirements

F-1 students must show one academic year – 9 months – of financial support to obtain an I-20. J-1 students must show financial support for the entire duration of their program to obtain a DS-2019. Please refer to the Budget and Costs for International Students chart for more information.

I-20 (F-1)/DS-2019 (J-1) Standard Start Dates

All fall-start students will receive an I-20 (for F-1 students) or DS-2019 (for J-1 students) with a standard fall quarter start date of Monday, September 19, 2022. Both F-1 and J-1 students are allowed to enter the U.S. up to 30 days before the start date listed on their I-20 or DS-2019, so this means fall-start students will be able to enter on or after Saturday, August 20, 2022.

Early Start Program Requests

If your department plans to run an in-person Summer 2022 early start or prep program that requires international participants to arrive prior to August 20, 2022, please notify ISPO by completing the Early Start Program Form no later than March 7, 2022.

If approved, these students will be directed to a specific I-20/DS-2019 application form in the iPortal to ensure they receive the correct document.

Questions and Resources

In order to support our departments, ISPO has a dedicated Campus Partners page with resources for you to help navigate common questions you might get from newly-admitted international students. If you have any case-specific concerns or issues, please feel free to contact our team at iNewStudent@ucsd.edu.

We also encourage departments to direct newly-admitted international students to ISPO's Newly Admitted International Students page (iNewStudent.ucsd.edu) which includes a wide array of information, checklists, and resources to help support their planning and arrival to the U.S.

If you have any questions about the above information, contact us directly at iNewStudent@ucsd.edu

Best wishes,
Gabriela Hoffmann | Assistant Director, Students Experience & Engagement
