In both Western and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the heart is an important organ that functions as an indicator of overall health. In TCM, the heart is responsible for our spiritual and mental activities, so it is a vital part of our lives!
As in Western medicine, the heart is responsible for the movement of blood throughout the cardiovascular system. In TCM, blood is considered to be primarily produced in the process of extracting food essence from the things we eat. As I always say, the foods we eat and the quality of our digestion are the key to our health.
Our health is reflected in the face we see in the mirror and is a direct result of the condition of our heart. If heart blood is robust, the fine vessels in the face will be well supplied, and we will have a glowing and healthy complexion. Sleep is also essential to maintaining a healthy heart—how much sleep needed differs from person to person, but undisturbed, quality sleep is the key.
