As we reach the end of the year, we’d like to take this opportunity to thank our members, partners and the wider health and physical education and sport community for your support of ACHPER. We can’t do what we do without you! Enjoy the break you have at this time of the year and we look forward to working alongside you again in 2023!

President’s Report - Dr Sue Whatman

We know the end of year is coming and yet it still seems to sneak up on us all too quickly! Our ACHPER branches all around the country have been delighted to offer a return to face to face professional learning and resources this year while still catering for online preferences under ongoing COVID19 conditions. We can tell you have been happy to have both options available – get set for an even bigger 2023!

In the October edition, I wrote from the National HPE Curriculum Leader’s Forum. Version 9 of the Australian Curriculum is now live and all state jurisdictions have been briefed on the changes in v9. Read more in the article below.

We mentioned in an earlier edition that we awarded Life Member to ACHPER SA co-president, Craig Fosdike, Fellow to Glenn Amezdroz from ACHPER QLD and former ACHPER Inc Vice President, and Fellow to ACHPER NT President, Carolyn Knutsen.

Each recipient was formally acknowledged in their own state at their annual conference and awards nights and I have also managed to present awards in person to Craig and Carolyn. I was fortunate to catch up with Carolyn at the recent Pan Pacific Masters Games on the Gold Coast in November, where it seems Carolyn is a very handy beach volleyball player, coming away with several Gold medals.

I want to thank all our wonderful staff and volunteers around Australia. Without you, ACHPER stops. I also want to particularly thank everyone who volunteers their time on our committees, especially the Strategic Review Committee, who have been working tirelessly to improve our organisation. Enjoy your time away with your families and we look forward to seeing you in 2023.

AC:HPE v9 is now live

... setting the expectations for what all young Australians should be taught, regardless of their background or where they live.

Health and Physical Education is now available from F-10 on the AC website. You’ll notice the amendment to the rationale for HPE here, emphasising that HPE enables students to participate in movement confidently and competently. The AC:HPE curriculum writers have focused on removing repetition across year level junctures within HPE, and between HPE and other curriculum areas (such as relocating dance to The Arts). An excellent summary of the approach to the changes is available in this video.

A key priority has been to develop a pathway for teaching consent from Foundation to Year 10, as mandated by the federal and all state and territory governments (Read more here). The word “consent” does not appear until the Years 3-4 juncture, but students develop their capacity to understand consent from the Year one descriptors, where they are taught to “understand the importance of assertive behaviour to ensure interactions with others are respectful and safe (and) … develop an understanding of reciprocal rights and responsibilities, and the ability to see things from other people's viewpoints.” (Read more here).

Research opportunity - How play can be better valued and prioritised in schools
