Annual Dr. Seuss Multilingual Virtual Read Aloud Event in the Library!
Every year we celebrate Read Across America week and Dr. Seuss' birthday with a Multilingual read aloud with his books printed in languages other than English. Due to safety concerns, this year's event will be a virtual one, utilizing FlipGrid to create read aloud videos at home. Then these videos will be shared with the entire school to view online.
The virtual event will be held the week of March 1st, 2022
Here is how it will work:
-
Parents/students express interest in participating and sign up for a book in the home language. Contact me for a list of titles and languages.
- Rockwell will check out the book in English AND the chosen languages (to the student), then deliver to the child in their classroom
- Parents/Students will record themselves on FlipGrid reading the books (tutorial on how to do this will be shared later this month - once we have sign ups and books are distributed)
- FlipGrid videos wills be shared with all classes the first week of March, 2022.
Once you received a list of titles/languages from me, find a book in your home language, discuss with you family on whether you want to participate. Then email me if you want to sign up. I will add your students name/your name to the list with the book you want to read.
If you would like to participate, please contact me no later than February 22nd, 2022.
I am so excited to continue to celebrate our students' culture and language while reading these classic, fun books!

Substitute Teacher Shortage
Dear Rockwell Elementary Parents,
Washington State and the Lake Washington School District is facing a huge substitute teacher shortage. Here at Rockwell, we find ourselves short of much needed classroom substitutes several times per week. In order to provide a teacher to these classrooms, we often have to pull a PE, Library, or Music teacher away from their schedule to cover a General Education classroom for the day. This creates a situation where many kids miss out on the PE, Music, or Library instruction for that day.
You might be a possible solution to our shortage. We are currently seeking a small group of Rockwell parents that would consider being "emergency substitutes" at Rockwell. The requirements to be an emergency substitute are flexibility, enjoyment of kids and a willingness to take on the adventure of leading a classroom for a day. You also must be vaccinated for Covid. We'll provide you with training and materials to be successful. No tech knowledge required - just willingness to give teaching a try. We're also happy to place you only in grade levels that you would feel comfortable in and only call on you on days that you've identified as convenient.
The daily rate of pay for substitutes is $191-$216 for a full day.
The full day hours are 7:35 - 3:35, half day hours are 7:35 - 11:35 and/or 11:35 - 3:35 (full day and half day include a half hour unpaid lunch).
If you are interested, or would like more information, please email me. Thanks for considering. The need is great and I look forward to our community coming together in this new way to help support our students.
Thank you for your consideration.
Michael Clark

Send a Teacher a Valentine
Teachers and staff have been working incredibly hard. This Valentine's Day, let them know how much you appreciate them. For a limited time, when you make a donation to Lake Washington Schools Foundation in a teacher or staff member's honor, we'll put their name on our Virtual Wall of Love, send them an inspirational postcard, or even include a special-edition enamel pin. Your donation supports our work and brightens their day!

Lunch Recess Volunteers Needed
We have an immediate need for parent volunteers to assist with lunch recess. Volunteers are needed to help Monday through Friday, for shifts between 11:40AM and 1:00PM. Volunteers will help coordinate specific recess activities for kiddos during lunch recess.
Specifically, volunteers will help manage a small group of kids for specific games (i.e. red light/green light game, coloring station, loom band crafts, shark/minnows sports challenges, HORSE basketball games, etc.) We'd love to have 4-6 parents helping each and every day. Even if you're not able to help the whole shift, we'd love the extra hands for even half and hour. In case you'd like to coordinate your volunteer shift to align with your child's recess, here's the recess schedule:
Kindergarten: 11:40AM - 12:00PM
1st Grade: 11:50AM - 12:30PM
2nd Grade: 12:00PM - 12:30PM
3rd Grade: 12:10PM - 12:40PM
4th Grade: 12:20PM - 12:50PM
5th Grade: 12:30PM - 1:00PM
This is an on-going volunteer opportunity, and we'd love for you to sign up for one shift, or even a dozen. To volunteer, please sign-up HERE
PLEASE NOTE: You must be an approved LWSD volunteer (you can apply HERE if you're not already a registered volunteer). You also need to verify your vaccination status with the district, or Stacy Hatch in our front office (you must bring your vaccination card and ID).
