Finishing the Year Strong!

Dear Students and Families,

The following is a message from your Principal...

Students - this message is a gift to you. Please listen carefully and internalize what I say, as it is essential to your success.

You have about 2 1/12 weeks left of instruction before finals. That’s it. Only 2 and a half weeks. Now is Go Time. That missing assignment in social studies turn it in! The essay in English - make revisions and get it to your teacher ASAP! The major project in your CTE Class? Ensure it’s your best work… Because grades for the semester are about to go final…

But Mr. Shaw, what about student support days? Can’t I bring my grades up then? Well, let’s have an honest conversation about that. In our finals schedule we have one day after finals for students to make up for missing work, retake assessments, etc… One day. On that day teachers will try and help you be successful. But if you think you're moving your grade from a 40% to a 60% you and I aren’t on the same planet.

  • There are no priority assignments to save folx who haven’t turned in their major assignments.
  • You will need to do the same work you have been putting off to pass… Do you think you can do that in one day with many of your classmates needing the teachers' support at the same time? I wouldn’t bet on it.

This message isn’t to scare you, but to inform you. The time is now. You have 2 and half weeks to do your best work. And passing isn’t enough. D’s do not prepare you for Career and College Success. C’s do not set you up for the most scholarships and opportunities. Now is the time. As and Bs folx.

Do something Real. Do the work. Time is running out.

Sincerely your Principal.

-Shaw

All incoming 8th grade students must complete an application. If your student is currently in kindergarten through 11th grade and is staying at their current school for 2024-25, you do not have to fill out a SchoolChoice application

Know before you go! Weather & Traffic Delays

Please read the following important information, so that you are well prepared

Snow and Weather Delay Schedule

As the winter season approaches, we want to ensure that everyone is well-informed about our procedures in the event of inclement weather.

In the event of Denver Public Schools calling a Weather Delay, whether it be a two-hour delay or a 90-minute delay, please note that CEC Early College will NOT have a different bell schedule. We will adhere to our regular daily bell schedule.

For instance, since our regular school day begins at 8:20 am, and that means if we are on a one-hour delay, students will report to their respective classes at 9:20 am. Similarly, if we are on a two-hour delay, classes will start at 10:20 am, two hours after our usual 8:20 am start time. It is important for students to go directly to the class they would normally attend at the adjusted start time. We want to ensure a smooth transition and minimal disruption to the learning process.

Construction Project/Travel Impacts on Federal Boulevard

In addition to this notice, we would like to inform you about Travel Impacts that are starting this week on Federal Boulevard that will affect your commute. Beginning Tuesday, November 14, through Friday, December 1, crews will realign how people travel on Federal Boulevard between West 22nd and West 28th Avenues, moving both northbound and southbound vehicle travel onto the west side of the roadway (in what's normally the southbound travel lanes) to install new stormwater pipes on the east side of the roadway.

While this temporary travel configuration is in place, there will be no access to Federal Boulevard from the east on West 24th, 25th and 26th Avenues. Instead, motorists will be detoured south on Eliot Street to West 23rd Avenue to cross Federal Boulevard and to access the north and southbound lanes of Federal Boulevard. People headed north and south on Federal Boulevard will be prohibited from making left turns at 23rd and 26th Avenues. People traveling west on West 26th Avenue will not be able to cross Federal Boulevard during this time but will be able to make left and right turns onto Federal.

We encourage travelers to choose alternate routes to avoid these temporary lane closures and travel impacts on Federal Boulevard. See map below.

The Low Energy Assistance Program (LEAP) is now accepting applications. LEAP works to keep communities warm during the winter (November through April) by providing assistance with heating costs, equipment repair and/or replacement of inoperable heating tools. While the program is not intended to pay the entire cost of home heating, they help alleviate some of the burdens that come with Colorado's colder months.

To apply for LEAP, you can submit an application several ways starting Nov 1st through April 30th:

OmniSalud is a program that provides undocumented Coloradans with a safe way to compare affordable health insurance plans and enroll on a secure online platform.

Thanks to a Colorado law passed in 2021, every company that sells health insurance in the state has to offer plans with a specific set of lower, fixed costs and make them available to everyone – no matter their documentation status. These are called Colorado Option plans and they are making healthcare more affordable and accessible for all Colorado residents.
