A Successful Fall Session
|
|
We were so happy to be in-person with 71 incredible fellows and all of our amazing faculty at our fall ELAM session in Wilmington, DE! The session was followed by an alumnae networking event for our classes of 2020 and 2021.
The in-person learning, bonding, and networking were phenomenal and we're grateful that we were able to host the session and event in-person. We're looking forward to our winter session in Sacramento at UC Davis, and don't forget to save the date for our alumnae professional development program also being held there, January 14 - 15, 2022!

Inside Higher Ed, September 17:
New study finds that increasing gender representation in graduate course syllabi affects male and female students’ perceived likelihood of succeeding in the course in surprising ways. The study has implications for academic role models and student success, too.

A lot of administrators could benefit from leadership training. Here are the pros and cons of different options.
The Scientist, September 21:
The revision allows more time on previous extensions due to COVID-19 and other life events such as childbirth that disproportionately impact early-career women in science.
Romper, September 21:
We are proud champions of “working mothers,” but that title has got to go.
The Chronicle of Higher Education, Academe Today, September 23:
Parenthood can be punishing for academics. Too often, colleges fail them.
The Chronicle of Higher Education, Academe Today, September 24:
A lot of administrators could benefit from leadership training. Here are the pros and cons of different options.
The New York Times, September 24:
The prizes are given annually, and many winners often go on to be awarded the Nobel Prize.
The Chronicle of Higher Education, September 27:
Maggie Doherty’s recent article a the challenges of parenting on the tenure track resonated with many readers. So we asked you for stories: What has your experience with parenting in academe been? Did you feel supported by your institution? What is your university doing right – and what can it do better?
Here’s some of what you said.
CNBC, September 27:
As the pandemic stretches into its 18th month, the burnout that comes with a surge in coronavirus cases and uncertainty about returning to the office has pushed many employees to their limits. New data from Lean In and McKinsey & Company, however, shows that the gap between women and men who feel burned out has nearly doubled — and that disparity is driving more women to consider downshifting their career or leaving the workforce altogether.
PNAS, September 28:
Unbiased science dissemination has the potential to alleviate some of the known gender disparities in academia by exposing female scholars’ work to other scientists and the public. And yet, we lack comprehensive understanding of the relationship between gender and science dissemination online.
