A Message from Pastor Sara

As you know, last week, I traveled to Wisconsin to accompany my parents. I knew it would be wonderful time to help them reconnect with their family and friends, but what I didn't expect was the joy I would have in wearing just one hat: daughter. I didn't need to worry about my pastor hat, or wife hat or mother hat. Those hats were put on pause and my full focus could be for my parents.

While that is not realistic for daily life it did give me pause to think about this juggling act that we all do with "our hats". Maybe your hats are not the same as mine. Maybe your hat is employee or employer. Maybe your hat is step parent our uncle . Maybe your hat is friend or companion. Maybe your hat is advocate or task doer.

Maybe, like Moses, in this week's reading, you don't feel up to snuf for one or all of your hats. This week for worship we will be encouraged and reminded that God provides purpose for each of us and gives us strength and courage when we don't feel like we are measuring up.

PS.... Pandemic parenting is really hard. I see all of you parents trying your best to wear this hat. I will be offering a group for support and encouragment later this fall. Please let me know if you are interested.

God's Peace,
Pastor Sara

Megan Rohrer installed as first transgender bishop elected in the ELCA

Rohrer, the first openly transgender pastor on the ELCA roster, was ordained extraordinarily by the Extraordinary Candidacy Project (which became Extraordinary Lutheran Ministries) in 2006, when the ELCA did not yet allow LGBTQIA+ rostered ministers to serve openly. In 2010, Rohrer was one of the first seven pastors received into the ELCA after the 2009 Churchwide Assembly voted to change that policy. Elected May 8 during an online synod assembly, Rohrer will serve a six-year term, becoming the first transgender bishop in the ELCA—or any major U.S. Christian denomination. Read more here.
Inauguration of the Rev. R. Guy Erwin
United Lutheran Seminary invites us to join them October 15-20 for events celebrating the inauguration of Rev. Dr. R. Guy Erwin as President of United Lutheran Seminary. Events will be held on both ULS campuses and at St. Peter's in Lancaster, PA. RSVP's are required for all events except the concert on October 17. Note: If you plan to bring a guest, they must register separately.

October 15 lecture and worship in addition to the October 16 installation ceremony will be livestreamed on the ULS YouTube channel.
Afghan Refugee Team
Donations for Afghan refugees
Joy Reigns has committed to supporting the work of Lutheran Immigration Refugee Service (LIRS) as it helps support Afghan refugees in the coming weeks and months. As we mobilize and await opportunities for supporting LIRS, there is an immediate need to fund the work LIRS is currently doing. Donations of any size are warmly welcome and you can give through the Tithely app or website and designate the funds go toward Afghan refugee support work. This money will be given to LIRS for immediate use in the critical 5-7 day waiting period between the arrival of a refugee family and the kick-in date of services from the government. This money helps LIRS fund food, emergency housing, transportation, and other basic needs. Thanks for your prayerful consideration. For any questions, reach out to Julie Rosekrans by clicking here

Steps 1-4: Building a Foundation

A team has been set up by the JRLC Council to explore the RIC (Reconciling in Christ) process. Team members are KL Broom, John Williams, John Osborn, and Hannah Rosekrans.

Since 1983, the Reconciling in Christ (RIC) Program has been a public way for faith communities to see, name, celebrate, and advocate for people of all sexual orientations, gender identities, and gender expressions in the Lutheran church. The RIC Program is made up of congregations, synods, colleges, seminaries, outdoor ministries, and other Lutheran organizations.

JRLC’s strategic plan, announced in June 2020, explores the process of becoming a RIC congregation. As the 11+ step process continues, your input will be sought and valued. The steps include education and testimonials as well as the crafting of a Welcoming Statement with congregational involvement throughout. The process includes a congregational vote to publish the statement and officially be considered a RIC Congregation.

The RIC process will begin by offering the congregation opportunities for engagement and input, and for understanding together what calling ourselves “RIC” means—and doesn’t mean. Look for more information and opportunities for engagement in the coming weeks. To learn more go to: https://www.reconcilingworks.org/resources/ric/
