Dear Friends,

What a fantastic Heroes of Hospice event we had last week...and a huge thank you to everyone who made it possible! This year, over 450 supporters joined Hospice of Santa Barbara (HSB) for our 9th Annual Heroes of Hospice virtual event which raised $170,000, surpassing our goal. The funds raised support our mission of providing care to anyone experiencing the impact of a serious illness or grieving the death of a loved one, free of charge. The event featured #1 New York Times bestselling author Elizabeth Gilbert as the Keynote Speaker who really blew all of us away with her insights, humor, personal stories, and thoughtful responses to viewer questions. She addressed unlocking our creativity, releasing fear, and how to become more resilient, especially during this tumultuous time of COVID-19 and re-entry back to “normal” life. Gilbert also shared her personal experiences with grief and why the work HSB does is so important. The event also recognized local heroes including Mi Vida, Mi Voz with the Partnership Award, the Beloved Bear Program with the Volunteer Award, Van Do-Reynoso, MPH, Ph.D., SB County’s Public Health Director, with the Medical award and Gary Simpson, owner of Santa Barbara Home Improvement Center, with the Legacy Award. A great big thank you to all of our sponsors and all of you who attended and donated. We wouldn’t be able to continue to do the work we do without you. A final heartfelt shoutout to Geoff Green who served as our eloquent and charming moderator who helped us raise a lot of money!

We are quickly pivoting to the Compassionate Care of Carpinteria (CCC) "The Light Shines Ahead" event which will also be virtual next Wednesday, October 6 from 6:00-7:00 P.M. PDT. The event, benefiting our programs in Carpinteria, will be free and will feature Ph.D., nonprofit leader, adventure seeker, and author of My Wild and Precious Life, Cynder Sinclair as our keynote speaker. Cynder will deliver an uplifting presentation of her life's journey and how Hospice of Santa Barbara eased her grief after her father’s sudden death and provided support to her entire family while her son was dying of cancer and after his death. She is a true inspiration for all of us to be a light in the darkness. All CCC services are offered free of charge in English and Spanish throughout Carpinteria. Compassionate Care of Carpinteria provides services to adults, children, and seniors who are facing life-threatening illnesses or grieving the death of a loved one. To learn more and register for the free event, please visit www.compassionatecareofcarpinteria.org/.

All are welcome!

Be well,

Judy is a registered Tax Preparer who has been helping people with tax and estate planning for 25 years. This free service is available to all HSB volunteers, clients, donors, staff, or anyone in the community who needs help.

In observance of physical distancing practices, Judy will be available over the phone or through the secure video chat service Zoom. Contact Judy Goodbody for your free and confidential assistance at (805) 770-7119 or jgoodbody@hospiceofsb.org.
