Torah Tidbits
Terumah

“Let them make me a sanctuary so that I may dwell among them.” [Ex.25.8].

The Tzeida la’Derekh (Rabbi Issachar ben Israel Lazar Parnas Eilenburg) observes that the Hebrew doesn’t say God will dwell “in it”, i.e., the sanctuary, but rather “in them” – the people. God doesn’t swell in houses of God. God dwells in the hearts and minds of people. When we com to synagogue, it is we who bring God’s presence with us. Alice Walker writes in The Color Purple, “Have you ever found God in church? I never did. I just found a bunch of folks hoping for Him to show. Any God I ever felt in church I brought in with me. And I think all the other folks did too. They come to church to share God, not find God.”

The Malbim (Rabbi Meir Yehudah Leibush ben Yekhiel) teaches that the physical sanctuary of God is just a reminder of what God really wants – that each person builds a sanctuary within his or her heart for God to dwell therein. Exodus 25.8 expresses God’s hope that we will open ourselves up to the spirit – for prayers and meditation, for Torah study, for relationship with ha-Kodesh Barukh Hu.  God has no need to dwell in buildings. What God desires more than anything is to dwell – to live – in each of us.

all who strive for its welfare
all who risk themselves to protect it.

Elohei Avoteinu, God of our ancestors
bless the land of Israel
may it flourish in hope and in honor
spread over it a shelter of peace.

Ma’ayan Hayyenu, Wellspring of our lives,

may we be spared from distress and shame.

Hamakom, All-present One
