The French-American Foundation invites you to its Annual Women of the Foundation Event around International Women’s Day.

This virtual event on women's leadership will feature guest speaker Colleen Ammerman, who will discuss her new book, Glass Half-Broken: Shattering the Barriers That Still Hold Women Back at Work.

Why the gender gap persists and how we can close it.
Women have made up roughly half of the college-educated workforce for years, and before the onset of the economic crisis of 2020, the gap between the percentage of women and the percentage of men in the labor force was the lowest on record. But women remain underrepresented in positions of power and status. The gender pay gap, for example, shows little movement, largely because high-paying jobs are the most gender-imbalanced. Even in areas where there are roughly equal numbers of men and women, or where women actually make up the majority, leadership ranks remain male-dominated. Read more.

This women event is open to everyone. We just want to highlight that the space we intend to create is one in which women are able to feel open, and to speak and engage fully with each other. We warmly invite those who do not identify as women to also contribute, listen and observe, while leaving space for the women present to feel empowered and safe.

You do not need a Zoom account to join. Registered guests will receive a link to join in the days leading up to the event. You can find the full list of descriptions and recordings of our webinars on our website.

WEEKLY FOCUS
Mental health and Covid
"During the pandemic, suicidal thinking is up. And families find that hospitals can’t handle adolescents in crisis. When the pandemic first hit the Bay Area last spring, Ann thought that her son, a 17-year-old senior, was finally on track to finish high school. He had kicked a heavy marijuana habit and was studying in virtual classes while school was closed. (...)"

"The pandemic has closed schools, offices, sports arenas and limited social interaction for millions of people -- perhaps an even bigger struggle for young people more used to being active. (...)"

"Mercedes Perez struggled to breathe. Her heart raced. Her right eye twitched.
The junior at Woodcreek High near Sacramento had never felt this way. It was the end of March, a few weeks after her high school cheerleading season was put on hold because of the coronavirus pandemic, and her anxiety had risen while stuck in her room at home. To this point, she had maintained control and tried to stay positive. But now she was having an anxiety attack. (...)"
