Weekly Update

A Message from Principal Simpson

Diana Simpson

Dear Parents,

Next week, we're offering parent-teacher conferences on Tuesday, Feb. 13, and Wednesday, Feb. 15. Families with students in grades K-4 should have received a sign-up form from their teacher(s). Please be mindful of your time, as the teachers have a lot of parents to meet with and a tight meeting schedule. One meeting that starts late or goes over can affect their entire night's schedule. For students in grades 5 - 8, teachers are offering drop-in conferences. Parents also should be mindful to keep their conference times to 5-10 minutes per teacher so staff have ample time to meet with all families. If you require a longer conference, please reach out, and we will see how that can be accommodated. Also, please be respectful of the scheduled dinner break, which is typically 5:30-6 p.m. for those grade levels.

As we approach the state-mandated testing (CMAS) window, I want to emphasize the importance of your child's participation in these assessments. While standardized testing can sometimes be met with apprehension, it is a valuable tool in evaluating our educational system and your child's academic progress. These assessments provide crucial insights into how well our school meets educational standards and where improvements may be needed. Additionally, they help identify areas where your child may excel or require additional support, allowing us to tailor their educational experience more effectively. By participating in state testing, your child contributes to a broader understanding of our educational programming and helps ensure that resources are allocated where they are most needed. We encourage increased participation in these tests this year to make our data more comprehensive and helpful to our programming decisions.

Middle school electives registration for the third trimester is scheduled for next week. Eighth grade will register on Monday, Feb. 12, seventh grade on Tuesday, Feb. 13, and sixth grade on Wednesday, Feb. 14. The electives catalog is linked HERE.

We are currently evaluating the weather forecast and will make an official decision regarding the middle school dance soon. Please be on the lookout for communication later today or early tomorrow.

I hope everyone has a good weekend, and I look forward to seeing you at conferences next week.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Simpson

Volunteer Recognition

BFA loves its volunteers, and we want to show our appreciation for all of your work. The PTO recognizes two volunteers each month. A volunteer will be chosen as the Volunteer of the Month, and will get exclusive use of the dedicated, reserved Volunteer of the Month spot in the parking lot for their respective month.

In addition, each month a volunteer will be randomly chosen through a drawing to win a fun, surprise gift. All you have to do to be eligible to win, is log at least ONE hour of volunteer service in the month prior to the drawing.

Thanks to all our volunteers for your continued support of BFA!

Congratulations Shaina Workman!

For the month of February, Shaina Workman has been selected as the BFA PTO Volunteer of the Month. She was nominated by the front office staff and is being recognized for the time she has spent volunteering at the school, and for always being willing to take volunteer projects home. Thank you, Shaina—we appreciate your initiative and willingness to support students and staff in multiple ways!

Shaina and her husband, Matt, have three children, Jo (third grade), Simon (first grade), and Gideon (who is excited to start at BFA in kindergarten next year!). They have been at BFA since Jo started in first grade during the 2021-22 school year.

When asked what they love about BFA, Shaina said, “Matt and I love the strong community within BFA and the academic rigor that is also fun! It is hard to find a rigorous school that emphasizes fun learning as well as traditional learning. We also love the arts programs here at BFA and you can often find Matt or me in the art room!”

Congratulations, Shaina. Thank you for all you do for BFA!

If you know an outstanding volunteer who should be considered for volunteer of the month, please email Janelle Nichols, PTO president.

Thank You Amanda Leverson

This month, Amanda Leverson is the winner of our drawing for her volunteer time in January, and has won a gift card to Starbucks. Congratulations, Amanda! And, thank you again for helping out around school!

Worry Worms

Thank You Jen Jones and Kelley Marie Paulson

Special thanks to Jen Jones and Kelley Marie Paulson for making worry worms for students! They've been making these adorable worms for students for months--and they're a hot commodity among the kiddos! They're perfect because they are soft, kids can easily hold them, and they're quiet! Plus they have a ring so kids can hook them to their backpacks and they're not easily lost. Thanks again to Kelley Marie and Jen for this thoughtful and meaningful contribution to our students!

Lightning Bolts Summer

Time to Register for Summer Care

It’s time to start considering where you are going to register your children for summer care and, most importantly, summer FUN!

BFA will offer summer camp again this year. We’re excited to offer this popular program as the kids love spending the day with their friends doing fun activities, and parents appreciate the peace of mind of knowing who is caring for their child. Registration will open tomorrow, Feb. 9, and is $35 per child. The registration fee includes one summer camp t-shirt and one day pack.

This registration does not guarantee your child a weekly spot—you’ll sign up for those later; however, it helps us know how many kids plan on attending so we can formalize staffing.

For questions about summer camp, please email Leigh Savoy, BASE director.

Also, volunteers should bring their own supplies.

Used Uniform Sale and Donation Timeline

The PTO will host a Used Uniform Sale from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 24, in the Lightning Gym. All uniform pieces will be $5 at the sale, or 5 pieces for $20. The PTO's goal is to continue to support our children, staff and families by offering affordable uniform options while simultaneously funding the PTO. Important Note: If parents bring their student(s) to the sale, they MUST stay with the parent at all times and not roam the halls.

Uniform Donations:

If you have gently used uniforms that you would like to donate to the PTO, you can leave them, as well as any uniform accessories, in the front office vestibule donation box starting Monday, Feb. 12, through Wednesday, Feb. 21. Donations also can be dropped off during Parent-Teacher Conferences. (Please wash and fold the clothing before donating.)

Volunteer Opportunities:

Looking for volunteer hours? Consider volunteering for the sale by contacting Jessica Kostelecky, PTO uniform buy back committee chair. Clothes will need to be sorted and organized prior to the sale, which can be done at home.

We hope to see you there!

Industry

PTO Virtue Awareness Program

It is February, which means we are one more month closer to the warmer days of spring. This month our students will be learning the virtue Industry.

The BFA interpretation of Industry is: Keep on task. There is a time for work and a time for play – do both with a good attitude.

What a great lesson for our students to learn at a young age, and there is no better place to learn the balance of fun and work than at school! Every day, our students are learning to balance the fun that they can have with their friends while also staying focused on their studies. (And, the teachers are balancing the fun they can interject into the classroom while keeping kids on task!) The hardest part of this virtue may be balancing it all with a good attitude. We can model this for them by maintaining a positive attitude about school activities and homework assignments.

May your February be full of positive thoughts and lots of love!

Landsharks Spring Season

Landsharks offers a non-competitive youth program to introduce running to young athletes in a safe and fun environment. The focus is on self-improvement, being an encouraging teammate, and making new friends. The Spring Track series is a fun-based program open to students in Kindergarten through sixth grade. Practices consist of running games and track workouts with a strong focus on fun. Practices start on Tuesday, April 9. See this flier for all the details!

bundt

Books & Bundts

If your preschool or elementary aged child loves to read, or needs some inspiration to keep him/her reading, then check out the Nothing Bundt Cakes Books & Bundts program. It is not associated with BFA, but we wanted to pass along the information as parents may find it helpful. We contacted the Lone Tree and Littleton locations to confirm their participation in the program. Happy reading!

Our mission is to create young adults with character like America's founding Renaissance man, Benjamin Franklin: well-read, scientifically curious, and civically engaged.
