One of the best kept 🤫 secrets in our district is the 📈 growth of the Winter Guard which is composed of students in the junior high and high school that are part of the marching band that competes in the fall. The Winter Guard brings together elements of dance with flags, rifles, and sabres. This year due to COVID the three 🦅 Nixa color guard teams are competing virtually but have been able to hold very small competitions in front of family.
Dr. Kevin Kopp, assistant superintendent, and Brandon Clark, director of athletics and activities, join Zac Rantz, chief communications officer to update the community on the various construction projects going on throughout the district.
Nixa JROTC Advances to National Championship in Leadership and Academic Bowl
Over spring break, Nixa's JROTC academic and leadership teams competed in the US Army Cadet Command's virtual competition and placed in the Top 40 in the US, which qualifies them for the JLAB Leadership Championship that will be help June 18-121 at the Catholic University in Washington, DC.  Over these days the team will compete in oral, written, and hands-on tests, examinations, assessments, and activities in 5 venues. There will also be experiential learning and a scavenger hunt of the DC Mall and Arlington National Cemetery, culminating with a visit/tour of Washington, D.C.

Leading up to spring break, the JROTC academic and leadership teams, which consists of 4 primary team members and 2 alternates, competed in the Level I and Level II competitions. The Level I competition was held this fall and consisted of 75 questions, allowing the team either 30 seconds or 60 seconds to answer, based on the type of question. The Academic questions are 75% ACT/SAT (math, science, English), 15% leadership, and 10% current events problems. The leadership questions are primarily taken from all four levels of the JROTC curriculum, with some current events and financial questions. They advanced to Level II after placing in the top 50% of the 1,631 academic teams and 1,430 leadership teams competing, which includes JROTC programs from across the U.S, Germany, South Korea, Japan, and Pacific Islands.

In March, the academic and leadership teams completed their Level II testing and scored very well, which advanced them to the championship rounds, with those placing in the top 40 going to Washington, DC.

The following JROTC cadets made up both the academic and leadership teams:
  • Michael Nevels
  • Jadzia Warren
  • Madalyn Morris
  • Kylie Brown
  • Dalton Brown
Nixa DECA Students Advance To International Competition
Nixa High School DECA students recently competed in their state competition at the DECA State Career Development Conference on March 8-19 after qualifying at the district level earlier this year.

Nixa High School’s DECA chapter earned the opportunity to advance to the International Career Development Conference and represent Missouri. The competition involves a combination of a written component such as an exam or report and an interactive component with an industry professional serving as a judge. In total, Nixa finished with four finalists who qualified to compete at the International Career Development Conference that will be held virtually on April 19-23.
