Dear Friends of The Blue Purl,

We like these newsletters to start off on a happy, or at least uplifting, note. Not today.

Today, well, we are a bit annoyed (just a bit, we are knitters after all).
What has us riled up?

Life is challenging enough. But there are some things that we can take as a given. Generally speaking, we can trust that people will stop at red lights. Generally speaking, we can trust that an elevator won’t just plummet to the ground. Generally speaking, you turn the key, and the engine starts.

But now we learn that putting ice on a sore muscle not only doesn't help, it actually makes it worse. Yes, that’s right. After all these years of being told by our parents – and telling our own children – put ice on sore muscles, we now learn we were doing harm! At least that is what exercise scientists have learned, prompting a rethink of this one-time essential truth.

Look, we are a yarn shop. We offer beautiful natural fibers, patterns, classes, buttons, magazines, all kinds of products and guidance. But our aim is not just to help with your craft, but to offer support for the whole you. Our newsletter recognizes that knitting, like gardening, and sports, is a singular practice but also a metaphor for life. When we come across something like the lesson of the ice, we feel like we should share it.

What is the lesson of the ice? Simple. Conventional thinking is not always right. We often confuse assumptions with knowledge. Everybody is doing it does not mean everybody is right.

As people who work with our hands, we know the value of tried-and-true. But we also know that sometimes we need to improvise. Just because that is the way it was always done, does not mean that is the way it should always be done. Let’s remember to think for ourselves.

We have never met an athletic coach who didn’t have an ice pack in his or her first aid kid. We may never even have met a parent that didn’t have a just-in-case icepack in the fridge.

And you know what? They were all mistaken, or really, misled.
We must always think for ourselves; question conventional wisdom; remember that when someone says 'That’s just the way it is,' it may not be.

The Blue Purl is a place to try this out. We will offer advice and guidance for your projects, but ultimately it is up to you to decide what is right for you.
No one else can do that, even though many will try.

We want to thank you all for being part of our community. We are grateful for your support, more than you can know. We hope you like our newsletters too. It’s our way of trying to connect and inspire. As we head into the spring and summer, we will be sending the newsletter every other week. It’s time for all of us to kick back, a bit.

But that’s if it works for you. Don’t let us tell you what to do. The Blue Purl told us to chill.

Maybe we will. Maybe we won’t.
You decide.

Want to make reading your patterns easier? Magnetic pattern/chart holders are the perfect answer. These pretty folders prop your charts and patterns up for easier viewing and the magnetic bar can be aligned to the chart row you need, just in time to try those fancy colorwork & lace charts. Find them online or in the shop.

We also have a small selection of Plystre project bags & crossbody totes, double lined in cotton canvas with pockets for all your project needs, handmade in Bulgaria designed by Norwegian company, Plystre. All bags are available online & in the shop.
Our Luminous shawl kit is perfect for spring weather. Each kit includes 1 skein each of hand dyed Baah La Jolla and Shibui Silk Cloud. The pretty pattern can be purchased on Ravelry and now, we've created a video of Keri demonstrating the beginning set up to this pattern. The video can be found here or just ask us for the link when you visit the shop. Kits are available online or in the store.
Just in case you missed it, we updated our Shibui Silk Cloud wrap to include the new spring colors released this year. This easy, stockinette wrap uses 7 colors of silk cloud, mindlessly knit in a loose gauge to create an elegant all season wrap. Of course, we still have the original color set in Tweed Silk Cloud. The pattern is included with the kit, available online or in the store.
Pippen
Pippen by Tamy Gore is our newest kit for warm weather. This simple meditative knit uses 2 skeins of fingering weight yarn to create an asymmetrical delicate shawl with an easy lace panel throughout. We put together kits in Freia Handpaints to create the gradual movement in color shown in the designer's sample. We also put together color combos in Jill Draper Ansel and TML & Lichen & Lace. The Freia kits are available online or in the shop. The others are available separately online or ask us in the shop to put together a combo for you. The pattern can be purchased on Ravelry.
Skala
Skala by Melanie Berg was released back in 2017 but its mesmerizing wavy pattern caught our eye with dreams of watching the beach waves. Melanie Berg is offering a 20% discount on this pattern with the code "weekend" until Saturday, 5/8. Skala uses Woolfolk Tynd, a luxuriously soft yarn with exquisite stitch definition. We've updated our inventory in the newest colorways that would be beautiful in this pattern. The pattern sale is on Ravelry and the yarn can be purchased online or in the shop.
Wisp Raglan
We love all the warm weather tops showing up in our Ravelry pages. Just released in May- the Wisp Raglan by Tif Neilan, a short sleeved top down raglan (no seaming) pullover. The sweet & simple colorwork is achieved from slipped & simple stranded stitches. The sweater is designed in Fibre Co. Luma or Cirro, worked on a larger needle for a loose airy gauge. The pattern can be purchased on Ravelry for 15% off with promo code 15WISP, until Saturday. Find the yarn in the shop or online.
Lullaby Blanket Kits
The weather just warmed up and we are already thinking about our beach knitting. Tin Can Knits released Lullaby, a versatile throw/blanket pattern with sizing for stroller, crib & throw and instructions for fingering to bulky weight yarn. As with all Tin Can Knits patterns, the instructions are clear and they have links to their online resources for more help.

We put together kits in colorful superwash Koigu fingering for a stroller sized blanket. These fun brights will become a go-to for snuggling for your recipient and of course, superwash keeps the blanket in constant use. The kits are available online or in the store. The Lullaby pattern can be purchased on Ravelry.
Baah Color of the Month
Just in- Baah's May color of the month. Beautiful blues & greens to remind us of Caribbean islands. These would look great in the Luminous Shawl mentioned above or in a light summery top. The yarn is available online or in the store.
Summer Reading
Laine Issue 11 is available for purchase this Friday. There's a beautiful lightweight, short sleeve top from Gudrun Johnston & a fun scarf from Stephen West to name just a few. The patterns are only available in Issue 11.

You can purchase your copy online or in store. If you preordered with us, you should receive an email or phone call by Friday.

Pom Pom Quarterly, Issue 37 is available for preorders. This summer issue has fingering, sport & DK weight tops for both knitting & crochet. Designed with lots of modern texture, the patterns can be previewed in Ravelry. We're taking preorders online or in the shop. The magazine will be out in late May. We only have a very limited number available in this issue.

Amirisu, Summer 2021, issue 22 is also open for preorders! It's like they know we want to plan our summer trips & need reading material for daydreams. This issue is about layers, with lace & eyelets or with multiple colors & textures. We won't be able to travel to Japan but this issue has a guide on Okinawa for daydream tours. You can preorder your copy of Amirisu online or in the shop.
Hooked
Just like the white wing dove...
I jumped in my 21 year old's car this week and he had Fleetwood Mac playing - that was unusual. One thing led to another and of course, our conversation went right to the shawls! Explaining Stevie Nicks twirling on stage with her shawls! Of course this led to me looking up patterns and here's a few I found - Just sharing in the nostalgia ;)

Bohemian Vest from Donna Cousin in The Edge of 17 (it's a collection) and a bit on the easier side of the Stevie Shawl by Erika and Monika Simmons. Just in case you want to give the twirl a whirl...

Speaking of The Edge of 17...Love these cute little crocheted Sideways Shorts - a first (free) pattern by Jade Oh - perfect for 17! Your teens and 20 sumpin's will love it!
