The Crowning of the Year
Thanksgiving is the final major feast of the church year. Primarily a national secular observance celebrated with family, food, and football, for Christians it is an opportunity to “give thanks” to our God. It is right that we do so, for Psalm 65:11 praises God with these words:

You crown the year with your bounty;
  your wagon tracks overflow with richness.

Almost every culture has some sort of harvest festival. Psalm 65 praises God for the abundant gathering experienced by the people of Israel. The Pilgrims would undoubtedly have given thanks for the harvest in their native England. And although modern America has long departed from our agrarian roots, we still feast in a fashion that suggests God has given a bountiful harvest.

Our opening hymn at tomorrow’s Thanksgiving service, Come, Ye Thankful People, Come, was written by Henry Alford for English village harvest festivals. While the hymn includes thanks for an abundant harvest of food, it also emphasizes the harvest of the Spirit. This is a reminder that as we grow in Christ, the Lord will come and gather us into his “harvest home.” Let us give thanks that God will gather us to himself, free from sorrow and sin to abide in God’s presence forever.

Reduce, Re-use, Re-cycle...
Many of you have made wreaths in past years and may have the foam or metal wreath wrings in your garage or storage. In the spirit of reuse, we encourage you to bring your wreath rings, and any gently used candles, to create your arrangement this year. We will provide plenty of fresh greens, pipe cleaners, wire and scissors for your use. And if you don't have a wreath ring at home, we will have extras on hand for you to start your tradition! If you would like to help or have any questions, please contact Kathy Compton.
