Pensacola State College fortified its position as a growing regional leader in cybersecurity on May 4, with the unveiling of the state-of-the-art Donald McMahon III Center for Cybersecurity, which is housed in the newly-opened Baars Technology Building

The Center for Cybersecurity was named for McMahon, a Pensacola businessman and philanthropist, in appreciation and recognition of his $250,000 donation to PSC to support students enrolled in the cybersecurity program or closely-related fields of study.

“Isn’t it something?" McMahon said as he toured the facility with friends and family members – including his adorable grandchildren. “This is going to help generations of students who are going into one of the most needed and fastest growing fields in the country.”

The College’s Bachelor of Applied Science Degree in Cybersecurity will also now bear McMahon’s name. PSC offers both an Associate degree and a Bachelor degree in cybersecurity.

Members of the McMahon family joined Donald "Donnie" McMahon, rear center, at the dedication of the new Donald McMahon III Center for Cybersecurity.
The Pensacola State College baseball team beat Seminole State College 4-3 in dramatic fashion on Wednesday, May 5, in the opening game of the state tournament in Lakeland, Fla.

PSC’s second game of the Florida College System State Activities Championship Tournament is against Miami Dade College at 6 p.m. central time, Thursday May 6, in Lakeland. The tournament runs through May 9.

The PSC baseball team went to the state tournament as Panhandle Conference champions, with a 17-7 conference record and a 27-18 overall record before state play began.

The PSC baseball team isn’t the only Pirate team with state dreams.

The Pensacola State College softball team speaks with many accents, but with only one voice. And that voice is loud and clear:

“We’re ready.”

Spring is turning out to be the most wonderful time of the year for Pensacola State College student Carolyn Lungaro.

Lungaro was one of 18 PSC students recently awarded Cantonment Rotary Club scholarships. Earlier this month, the Culinary Management major also won a bronze medal at the SkillsUSA Florida 2021 Virtual State Leadership and Skills Conference.

“Thanks everyone for believing in me,” Lungaro, a Louisiana transplant, told members of the Cantonment Rotary Club during a scholarship luncheon held April 28 at St. Luke United Methodist Church in Pensacola.

“This scholarship will help me reach my dream of earning a college degree – something that I never considered possible when I was younger,” said the 60-year-old, who wants to eventually own a food truck specializing in Cajun cuisine.

PSC’s Honors Biology students tackle complex issues, subjects
They are some of our best and brightest – young Pensacola State College Honors students with a passion for knowledge and a talent for research.

On April 30, 10 PSC students participated in the Honors Biology Research Project Component and presented their research to instructors and peers. The presentation was sponsored by the Robinson Honors Program
The April event was the second Honors Biology Research Project Component presentation, with the first coming just over a year ago before the COVID-19 shutdown.

“The presentations are just so amazing and showcases all of their research and hard work," said Natural Sciences Associate Professor Melissa Sears, who is also adviser to the PSC Biology Club. “They really put so much into it.”
