I’m pleased to share that at the end of September, Shorewood elected officials unanimously moved to support an estimated $1.8 million library renovation which will be almost entirely funded with a bequest from the Lange family. The Village trustees committed to provide village spaces for library services during the construction period and the expertise of fellow village staff at various points during the renovation process.
Support from the Village Board is one of the early steps in the renovation process. Soon, the Library Board will hire a construction management firm to complete design and construction drawings, lead the public bidding process, execute the actual construction work, and bring the project to completion. These next steps will begin soon and will continue through 2023.
We are committed to keeping you apprised of the renovation process. Most importantly, we are committed to providing high quality library service through all phases of the project and ultimately a library space that better meets your needs and exceeds your expectations.

Our senior clerk Nathan left the library at the end of September after nearly 15 years of service. Nathan played a vital role for the library and our patrons. Not only did he excel in his position, Nathan built strong and positive relationships with staff and patrons. His contributions to the team, his leadership, and his good-natured demeanor will be greatly missed.
Here are a few parting words from Nathan:
"I am sorry to be leaving the library as I feel that I grew so much here, but I am looking forward to the next chapter in my career path with Northwestern Mutual. I have so many great memories of my time here with the staff and patrons... I will miss you all so much!"
We will miss you, Nathan! We wish you the best of luck in your new position at Northwestern Mutual!

LITTLE FREE LIBRARY GETS AN UPGRADE
|
This summer a concerned patron of the Friends’ Little Free Library reported that the structure was in sad condition. When I stopped by the west side of the library on Murray Avenue to take a look, I had to agree. The door was nearly hanging off. The once bright green and blue paint was faded and peeling. Books inside the structure had clearly suffered some water damage from loosening shingles on the roof.
The Little Free Library was getting on in years, so Friends of the Shorewood Public Library Vice President Joan Spector wondered if we should just replace it. Then, David Weissman came to our rescue. "Not so fast," he said, assuring us he could repair it and make it look as good as new. He removed the structure and took it home, causing no end of dismay on the part of patrons who worried that the Little Free Library might be gone forever. But, in less than a week, David rebuilt the roof and door, replaced the hinges, and repainted the entire structure. It is now back in its place on Murray Avenue next to the Shorewood Public Library which itself will be undergoing a renovation tentatively beginning in October 2022!
Our heartfelt thanks to David Weissman for bringing our Little Free Library back to life!

If you're looking for a disturbing yet fascinating read just in time for Halloween, look no further. Not for the squeamish or faint of heart, Rosenbloom's thrilling narrative of her research, identification, and testing of super-rare books bound in human skin is great for those of us with a bit of morbid curiosity. Raising questions about ethics, science, and our relationship to death, Dark Archives will leave you with almost as many questions as answers about this macabre piece of book history.

Empty is an unflinching, honest look at how binge eating disorder, a lesser-known eating disorder that affects thousands of people, shaped the development of author Susan Burton's adolescent and adult years. Eloquently written, and sometimes painfully uncensored, Burton recounts how she grappled with this devastating illness, and how its far-reaching side effects weaved into every aspect of her life. Empty is an engaging and intense read that prompts an examination of one's own relationship with food.

This debut historical mystery takes us to the heart of 1920s Harlem where a series of brutal murders of young, black women are found to be connected through their work at an illicit club. This finds Louise Lloyd confronting her past. Louise, hailed as “Harlem’s Hero” when at 15 she rescued herself and several other girls from a kidnapper, now dances her nights away with friends and lovers and is all too happy to forget what happened to her. When a detective demands her help in exchange for not arresting her, she reluctantly joins the hunt for the Girl Killer. Dead Dead Girls is a dark mystery with both a subtly strong hero and perfectly evil villain at its heart.

INFORMATION YOU CAN TRUST
|
With so many sources for information, it can be hard to sort out fact from fiction and to determine who to trust.
The Wisconsin Department of Health Services webpage has up-to-date information about the COVID-19 pandemic including data about the vaccination rollout, who is eligible, and where to get a vaccine.
