FACILITY REMINDERS
To keep our facility clean and safe, we ask members and participants to follow these requests:

  • Please remember to shower before entering the pool deck.

  • Please dry off before entering the locker rooms from the pool area.

  • When wiping down touch points, including in the Wellness Center, please spray your rag with the cleaning solution and then wipe down the equipment/touchpoints. Please refrain from spraying machines or surfaces directly, as that can create rust.

STAFF SPOTLIGHT
Janneke Sobeck, CEO

How long have you worked for the Winona Family YMCA? I am proud to say that March, 2022 will be my three-year anniversary!

Tell me a little about what you do at the YMCA: As CEO I have the privilege of wearing many hats. We have a great team environment and help each other across departments. Some of my favorite aspects of what I do include managing an amazing team of approximately 100 employees, working toward our strategic goals, managing community partnerships, writing grants, giving tours, and fundraising.

What is it that makes you enjoy working at the Winona YMCA? Definitely the people and the variety. No encounter is the same, and no day is the same. We have a very hard-working team of employees, an incredible Board of Directors, a generous group of donors, a loyal membership, and thoughtful volunteers.

What’s your favorite thing to do at the Y? Workwise I really love making the rounds to check on our staff and programs. For fun, my favorite thing is Melissa’s HIIT class, and racquetball with my husband.

Favorite YMCA moment? I’ve had so many great moments at the YMCA, but the one that I am probably the proudest of is January 7, 2021 when we opened our new facility. I got to work around 4:30am to help with opening, and didn’t leave until after 9pm. I wanted to do everything I could to ensure our staff felt supported, and our members had a positive first day in our beautiful new space.

What do you do and enjoy doing when you are not working? I love moving (running, walking, biking, hiking, swimming), reading, and cuddling with my boys!

Fun Fact about you: By the time I was 8 years old I had lived on 4 continents (North America, Asia, Africa, Europe)

Hannah Amy, Personal Trainer

How long have you worked for the Winona Family YMCA? 6 months (3 of it or so was part of my internship, other part actual employment)

What do you do at the YMCA?
I help people perform to the best of their ability and help them learn correct form for exercises to prevent injuries.

What is it that makes you enjoy what you do here? The relationships that are built with the members and coworkers.

What is your favorite thing to do here? I like taking the classes when I have time, such as Body Pump and yoga among others.

When you are not at work, what do you enjoy doing? Spending time with family and friends, taking nice long walks in the fresh air.

Fun fact about you: I like painting with many different mediums, but if I had to choose, water color or acrylic would probably be my favorite.

JOINING THE TEAM
Brandy Walentiny
Youth Development Director
Brandy joined the YMCA Leadership team as our Youth Development Director in early January. Since joined the team she's hit the ground running, learning how to best help the staff, families and children in the After School Care program, and working on opening our new programs at Rollingstone Community School.

Working with children is not anything new for Brandy, who is a mom to three busy kiddos; she was also a preschool teacher for about nine years. Brandy is excited to see what the future has in store for our child care programs at the Y.

While settling into her role over the past month, Brandy has enjoyed the support from the families in the program and her colleagues as she conquers her new role. "Everyone has been so kind, helpful and positive towards me."

Please help us welcome Brandy to our awesome team!
Suzanne Redepenning
Grants & Fundraising Director
You may recognize this face from the Front Desk, or from the lifeguard stand, but beginning February 1, she begins a brand new adventure as our Grants and Fundraising Director!

Suzanne has been with the YMCA since August 2020, first as a Lifeguard, and added on additional duties as a Member Services Representative. While Suzanne is sad to hang up her whistle, and leave her station as being first to greet our fabulous members, she is eager to foster the growth and success of our YMCA by applying for grants to better support our organization's needs. In addition to grant writing, Suzanne will coordinate the fundraising schedule, plan special events and connect our self-less volunteers with departments that fit their interests.

While Suzanne enjoys many parts of the Winona Family YMCA, swimming is her favorite activity to do here. She says it's a great workout because of the long-term benefits. It's gentle on joints and muscles and it helps clear her head. When Suzanne isn't working or swimming, she enjoys walking and hiking with her husband, and taking as many camping trips as possible!

Suzanne is thankful for all the support she's received from YMCA staff and members, and is excited to continue making positive contributions to our cause.

Please help us welcome Suzanne onto the Leadership team, and congratulate her on her new role!
Melissa Gernes
Personal Trainer
Expanding on her love for fitness and exercise, Melissa has joined our roster of talented personal trainers! Melissa began leading group fitness classes such as HIIT, group cycling and water aerobics, two years ago, and has now obtained her accreditation as a YMCA-ACE Strength & Conditioning certified trainer.

Melissa is passionate about helping people find a workout that is fun and challenging at any level. She enjoys seeing people find love, enjoyment and appreciation for their bodies, and seeing what each person is capable of. Melissa believes that working out should be an act of love for your body, and she is ready to help members achieve their goals and boost positivity, love and appreciate for every body!
Thanks to the generous support of our donors, we are excited about some new additions to the Wellness Center!

Currently available- resistance bands, exercise balls, Nu-step machine, jump ropes, mats.

Coming soon- kettlebells, bicep curl machine, tricep curl machine, adjustable bench, several additional bars.

We are always looking for ways (and dollars!) to improve our offerings. Let us know if you have ideas!
MANY WAYS TO GIVE TO THE Y
Memorials and Honorariums
Throughout our many years in Winona, we have lost many dear friends from our YMCA. We understand that sometimes it helps to express your sympathy for the loss of a special person in a way that is lasting. The Winona Family YMCA would be honored to help you memorialize a beloved family member, friend, colleague, or community member.

We also offer the option of honoring those you love who are still with you or commemorating happy occasions, such as birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, retirements, and graduations via a donation to the Y. There are so many wonderful opportunities to show someone you care about them (and the Y)! Memorials and honorariums support our Annual Campaign but can be designated to specific YMCA services and programs upon request.

For more information please contact Suzanne Redepenning at sredepenning@winonaymca.org
There are many ways to give:

1. Check, cash donations, or debit or credit card (please note the YMCA is charged a 3% processing fee for all debit or credit card donations)

2. In-kind donations of appreciated stock

3. IRA charitable donations to suffice your Required Minimum Donation

4. Name the Winona Family YMCA as beneficiary of your life insurance policies, Trusts, Investments accounts, or as a bequest in your Will

5. Real Estate

6. In-kind donations
SELF-CARE
Resilience is our ability to get through challenging circumstances, and come out even stronger and wiser on the other side. It is a foundational component of our mental health. Resilience is like a muscle, the more we train it, the stronger it gets. It grows through healthy and supportive relationships, taking care of ourselves and others, and asking for help when we need it. Join our friend Sarah Johnson for the Dinner Table Resilience video series and skills sheets on building resilience. Tips, topics, skills, and strategies that we can use at our own tables to build resilience in ourselves and others.

Thank you to our friends at the La Crosse Family YMCA for allowing us to promote these fantastic videos to our members!
