Becoming a Trauma-Informed Educator

June 29 & 30, 2022

Becoming a trauma-informed educator involves being prepared to realize, recognize, and respond to individuals who have experienced trauma. Individuals who have experienced trauma are at an increased risk for being negatively impacted academically, behaviorally, and socially. Through this training, participants will gain a foundational understanding of trauma and the potential impact it has on the brain and ultimately, student outcomes. Participants will learn and apply trauma-informed practices that can be implemented both at the classroom and building-level, with an emphasis on cultivating a positive learning environment. Finally, strategies for self-care and understanding compassion fatigue and burnout will be addressed to support the education personnel.

All handouts and resources will be shared electronically. Please bring a computer, tablet or mobile device to access materials for the session.

PLEASE NOTE: The exploration of trauma itself can be upsetting and triggering for some individuals. Participants should come with the understanding that sensitive content will be discussed during this training. Trigger warnings for sensitive materials will be provided.

This training has previously been provided to districts upon district request; this is the first time we are hosting an open event at CIU 20 for school personnel who wish to learn more about trauma-informed practices. If you have previously received training with your school district, you are welcome to attend with the understanding that the content remains consistent with prior trainings.

Learner Outcomes:

  • Define trauma and examine the signs and symptoms of trauma.
  • Evaluate the rationale for trauma-informed practices, including how trauma impacts brain development.
  • Identify, examine, and apply knowledge related to trauma stress responses.
  • Identify specific strategies to support students who have experienced trauma.
  • Examine the relationship between foundational classroom management strategies and trauma-informed practices.
  • Review tips to support educational personnel's well-being.
