Emergency Broadband Benefit Program Enrolls Over One Million Households
Federal Communications Commission Acting Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel announced last week that the Emergency Broadband Benefit Program enrolled more than one million households in the first week of the program’s debut. Households in all 50 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and American Samoa are benefitting from the subsidy program initiated by Congress.

Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget Launches New Tools to Educate Citizens and Youth About the Federal Budget
Over the next decade, the federal budget will spend $60 trillion – that’s roughly $190,000 per person. That is why the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget is launching Budgeting for the Future – an interactive suite of tools to educate members of the public and solicit their input about our national budget priorities. These tools are available here.

Use of Funds and Upcoming Deadlines For ARP
Our colleagues at the Chief Council of State School Officers (CCSSO) have released two documents that outline the upcoming due dates and use of funds requirements for state and local education agencies in the American Rescue Plan (ARP). You can access the ESSER III deadline document here and the criterion concerning the use of ARP funds here.

Biden Announces USED Civil Rights Appointment
President Biden announced his intent to nominate Catherine Lhamon to serve as USED’s Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights, which is the role she held during the Obama Administration. Lhamon currently serves on the White House Domestic Policy Council as Deputy Director for Racial Equity and Justice.

Marten Confirmed as USED Deputy Secretary
On May 11, the Senate confirmed Cindy Marten, the superintendent of San Diego Unified School District, as USED Deputy Secretary on a 54-44 vote. A statement from USED Secretary Miguel Cardona is here.
