New Research Project and Opportunity!
The American Lung Association and Northwestern Medicine have been awarded a National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant to conduct the first federally funded U.S. cohort study of millennials. The American Lung Association Lung Health Cohort will be the largest study ever funded for the Lung Association. Though similar studies have been conducted for heart disease, this is the first ever to examine lung health that can be translated into actions for preventative care. Some highlights from the upcoming study include:
- It will follow 4,000 young adults, 25-35 years old, from 17 different regions across the U.S. painting a clear picture of lung health across the nation.
- Each participant will be tracked for six years providing details on lung function, respiratory symptoms, lifetime residential and occupational histories, health behaviors, fitness, biomarkers, and chest imaging.
- The use of low-dose CT scans to track intermediate stages of lung injury and abnormalities in the participants' windpipes.
-
The American Lung Association's Airways Clinical Research Centers (ACRC) Network will conduct the research, they will work closely with researchers at several other top organizations in their field.
Researchers hope to determine whether air pollution, inhalants like marijuana and e-cigarettes, and other outside factors have a correlation with lower lung function. By identifying these factors, we cannot only help people catch lung disease earlier, but work to prevent it.
Volunteers are needed! To learn more about the Lung Health Cohort, visit Lung.org. To volunteer, speak with a lung health expert or the principal investigator, contact Elizabeth Cook at Elizabeth.Cook@lung.org.

New Media Campaign, I COVID QUIT
With cases of COVID’s Delta variant increasing across the globe, the University of California San Francisco, UCSF, Smoking Cessation Leadership Center wanted to remind you that they have a free I COVID QUIT social media campaign. This campaign sends a relevant and timely message that it’s a good time to seek help to quit smoking.
During the Olympic games in Tokyo, the importance of mental health has been addressed by commentators and athletes alike. Though most people are familiar with the physical benefits of tobacco cessation, the mental benefits are less well-known. Quitting smoking can have the equivalent effect of an anti-depressant and increase long term sobriety by 25%. Our campaign spokespeople address these vital topics in their videos.
You can find UCSF's campaign materials, as well as a social media toolkit with ideas for captions and hashtags, at ICOVIDQUIT.org. Feel free to take advantage of these materials to spread the word to your audiences!
