Happy December!
I don’t know where this year went. In a blink of an eye, it was 2022. Here at AGA we have been very busy saving over 240 dogs this year and are happy to report that we have found all wonderful new homes for them.
|
|
Working during Covid was hard on us and delayed our accomplishments but you can never tell an AGA volunteer to slow down and take a shortcut. Not one volunteer that I know would do that to risk hurting a dog’s chance to get into AGA. This has been a year of perseverance and it paid off for 240+ goldens and doodles as well as for the 86 china dogs who would have been butchered and eaten. AGA saved them from a horrific death and found them all new homes in America. We are very proud of what we did in a very challenging year. Without the help of our adopters and donors, this year would not have seen these accomplishments.
But I must tell you we need your help even more now. With our economy affecting families everywhere many find they cannot afford the care their golden requires and needs. Americans do not have money for their own health insurance and must cover themselves and their children before buying pet insurance. If their golden has an accident and needs medical care or they discover their golden has to be treated for heartworms costing nearly $1,000 many believe their only recourse is to take their beloved golden to the local pound/shelter. Not everyone in Georgia knows about us and unfortunately, some people are desperate to find a new home for their dogs they put them in the car and drive their dog(s) to another city and find a nice-looking subdivision and drop their dog off and drive away hoping a friendly person will find them and care for them. Think of the fear that golden is feeling watching his people drive away. He has lost his world.
We need your donations so we can be the team who rescues these dogs. We also need you to volunteer to be their friend in their foster home and help us to care for those sad and lost dogs until we can find them a new family and make them feel loved and safe again. Think of your golden and if he/she was left out in the country alone. Would you consider helping us to be a foster family? We will match you and your lifestyle with the right golden. Click here to complete a foster application for a golden waiting for you.
Thankfully Golden retrievers are resilient and bounce back with lots of attention – WE ASK YOU TO PLEASE donate to help us do our work. Or if you are unable financially, can you open your home to become a foster family for these wonderful Golden? Can you give them a holiday they will remember forever?
Another way to help this holiday season is through our AGA Store ( everyone loves to get AGA stuff!). 100% of the proceeds goes to saving Goldens in need. Your golden would love to get a new stuffed Webster dog (only $25!). A great gift for under the tree on Christmas morning that they will never forget.

On behalf of every AGA volunteer, I wish you a safe and beautiful holiday and a Happy New Year!

Take care with tinsel and other
holiday decorations.
|
|
The sights and smells of holiday decor may contribute to the magical feeling of the season. But they also create real dangers for your pet. Here are a few common risks to watch out for.
-
Tinsel is pretty, but if your pet ingests it, it can require surgery or even be deadly.
-
Lights and other electrical decorations may tempt tenacious chewers. But they’ll give a painful shock and, if swallowed, can cause internal issues.
-
Potpourri can cause digestive upset if eaten, as it often contains toxic essential oils.
-
Christmas trees should be secured so that they don’t accidentally topple over. It’s also important to keep your dog away from the water pan, especially if you’ve mixed in additives. And keep in mind that some Christmas trees are sprayed with preservatives.
-
Ornaments may look like toys to your pet. But if eaten, they can cut your pup’s mouth or cause serious gastrointestinal problems. Broken ornaments are not only a bummer for the family, but could also leave a mess of sharp pieces that can cut your pet’s paws.
-
Mistletoe and holly are toxic to pets (as are many plants). So, if you put these festive plants out, be sure to hang them out of reach.
-
Candles pose a fire risk if you’ve got an enthusiastic tail-wagger.
-
Essential oils—including citrus, cinnamon, and peppermint oils—can cause respiratory issues, or at the very least, overwhelm your pet’s sensitive nose (something to consider if you like to use a diffuser).
-
Gift wrap and packaging may be fun to shred but if ingested, these materials may cause digestive blockages.

Orphan Spotlight:
Meet Toby!
|
|
Hello everyone! I am a newcomer to AGA and would like to tell you a little about myself. I have been living “rough” with my owner for a while now inside an old car. He took me to the animal shelter because he couldn’t take care of me anymore. I knew that was the end of me because not many people go there looking for a senior dog to adopt. Some say I could be 14 years old. My coat is not in very good shape and I am pretty skinny since there has been very little food for me. I also had a bunch of fleas and am some kind of a “mix” breed dog. My coat is the color of a golden retriever but that’s about all I can tell you for sure. If you see my ears you might think I’m part YODA :). When someone told AGA that I was in a shelter a driver came for me almost at once. What a relief! My new doctor has checked me over and my report is a good one. I have some other medical things to do but then I’ll be ready for adoption. I want very little. Just a soft bed, someone to walk with me, and a family with no other dogs as I do kind of like to be the boss-dog. Oh, and yes, I would love to know I will have a good meal every day and plenty of love. I am so relieved to feel safe and now to be wanted is all I need.
Thank you from a very grateful Toby

Many of us will be hitting the road for the holidays and taking our Goldens with us. Follow these tips so your holiday travel is pet friendly. If your Golden is staying home with the pet sitter or in boarding while you are gone, here are some things to think about. And don't forget to get your Golden a flu shot if he/she hasn't already had one.
