New bipartisan legislation introduced in the House aims to reform Medicaid to enable the use of value-based purchasing agreements in Medicaid.
The Medicaid VBP Act, released Tuesday, aims to ensure new treatments such as gene therapies would be administered under Medicaid via a value-based agreement that reimburses drug makers based on the outcomes the drug provides.
“For too long, policy has not caught up with reality and it’s the patients who are suffering the consequences,” said Rep. Markwayne Mullin, R-Oklahoma, one of the chief sponsors of the legislation, in a statement.
Starting in January 2023, health care payment policy will take an important step toward health equity. Last month, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) announced a new accountable care model that replaces the prior Directing Contracting models and incorporates changes to help organizations address equity and access through accountable care organization (ACO) participation. The forthcoming ACO Realizing Equity, Access, and Community Health (REACH) model makes several foundational advances required for promoting equity through payment model design.
On February 24th, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) revealed the highly-anticipated fate of the Innovation Center’s (CMMI) Direct Contracting model options, announcing a redesign of the Global Professional Direct Contracting (GPDC) Model and the permanent cancellation of the Geographic Direct Contracting (“Geo”) Model. The revamped and rebranded GPDC model—now called Accountable Care Organization Realizing Equity, Access, and Community Health (ACO REACH)— aims to better reflect the agency’s vision and Administration’s priorities for system transformation.

The rebrand from the Accountable Care Learning Collaborative (ACLC) to

Educating and reskilling the workforce is central to the success of the value movement. The Institute is committed to advancing the knowledge and competency of the health industry, and our educational products, research, and peer learning collaborative accelerates industry readiness.
