Protecting Lakeway's Tree Population
February is next week, which means many in the community will start hearing the phrase, "Never Prune February through June!" Basically, residents shall not prune oak trees during this period. Not only could it harm our tree population, but it is also prohibited by city ordinance (section 14.06 Diseased Trees) with a possible fine not to exceed more than $1,000. The ordinance also outlines other restrictions to help prevent oak wilt from spreading in the community. Spring is typically the highest risk season for new oak wilt infections due to an increase in sap feeding beetles, more susceptibility for fungal mats in the moderate temperatures and high humidity, and the fact that sap typically rises in Spring, making Oaks more susceptible to infection. The heat of the Summer is typically the best time to prune oaks when temperatures exceed 100 degrees due to less active beetle activity and because oak wilt fungal mats typically dry up in extreme heat. Here are some additional tips for preventing oak wilt:

  • Avoid oak wilt-infected firewood.
  • Destroy infected red oaks before they make spores.
  • Paint all wounds on oaks immediately.
  • Prune when the risk is low (extreme heat or cold is best, but not allowed during the Spring season).
