Sculpture Garden at Hartwood Acres

Once the snow melts and the spring breezes warm the winter chill, the Sculpture Garden at Hartwood Acres will be nearing completion. This area of Hartwood Acres Park has been closed to the public for safety reasons while construction is underway. So here's a chance to see what's waiting at the site once it reopens! No date has been set for that yet, as weather and materials acquisition will help determine the timeline.
We've been providing frequent updates on the activities surrounding the construction progress of the Sculpture Garden since the planning began several years ago. Here's the latest!

Never mind that the placement of this colorful trio happened to be scheduled on one of the coldest days of the year; art persists!
Their placement in their permanent setting, on a recent January day, ended to stunning effect. This was among the last sculptures to be situated in the Sculpture Garden at Hartwood Acres and the result proves it was well worth the wait.
This sculpture takes on the look of airy, cloud-like forms with the appearance of paper cut-outs. Prior to its debut at Hartwood Acres years ago, it was on view for six months at Central Park in New York City. Its new placement captures a view of the mansion in the background.

This sculpture was also moved to its permanent setting last month. The weathered, rust-colored surface plays dramatically against the crisp, blue sky. This angular sculpture can look either two- or three-dimensional depending upon the angle it is viewed. At times the sculpture appears to be two suspended viewfinders. It has found its permanent home along the access road connecting the mansion and the parking lot located at the opposite end of the Great Lawn.
The Sculpture Garden at Hartwood Acres is made possible in part by the RADical ImPAct Grant program, which was launched in celebration of the Allegheny Regional Asset District’s 25th anniversary with the intention of funding bold, forward-looking, creative projects that will have a radical impact on the region.

Thanks to a growing list of generous individuals, foundations and Allegheny County, the Sculpture Garden at Hartwood Acres has taken shape over the course of several years. But with a project as complicated and extensive as this one, expenses remain.
As the warmer months approach, we are planning to install landscape plantings of native species designed to highlight each sculpture's unique features within a naturalistic setting. We are also in the process of designing interpretive signs that will offer details about each sculptor and the significance of each work of art.
We need your help to complete this unique regional destination attraction, one that will inspire and delight park visitors for many years to come. Make a donation today, or explore numerous opportunities to make a lasting contribution that reflects your own interests by emailing Caitlin Harpster, Development Manager of Individual Giving, or by calling her at 724.327.7627

Become a conservationist in 15 minutes - without leaving your home!
Join the global movement of the Great Backyard Bird Count. Maybe you'll be lucky to find a Cedar Waxwing like the one pictured above in Harrison Hills Park, a popular birding location.
The bird count is an international registry that helps scientists understand bird populations. This year, the count takes place over the Presidents Day weekend (February 18-22.) It's easy to participate. Conduct the count alone or with others and pick any place you find birds.
Step 1 – Decide where you will watch birds.
Step 2 – Watch birds for 15 minutes or more, at least once over the four days.
Step 3 – Count all the birds you see or hear within your planned time/location and use the best tool for sharing your bird sightings:
Or consider counting birds at one of the meadows in the Allegheny County Parks. Birds love meadows!

Is your special someone a nature lover? Show them how much you care about them by caring for the environment with a donation to our Tree Fund in their honor!
Since 2017, funding from the Allegheny County Parks Foundation has contributed to the planting of more than 3,000 trees throughout the parks. With the declining tree canopy in our region due to development and disease, your gift will have a lasting impact on our region's ecosystem.
We'll provide a tree planting certificate honoring your loved one or special friend for donations of $50 or more. Every donation goes toward reforestation and beautification in all nine Allegheny County Parks.
