12 “Even now,” declares the Lord,
“return to me with all your heart,
with fasting and weeping and mourning.”
13 Rend your heart
    and not your garments.
Return to the Lord your God,
for he is gracious and compassionate,
slow to anger and abounding in love,
and he relents from sending calamity.

A Call to Return

“Come and get it!” These words would follow the ring of the dinner bell. Traditional dinner bells were routinely hung on the outside of a home to signal the family to return to the house for dinner. This was especially important for farmers and ranchers as the family would often be scattered across the property tending the animals and the land. The well-known triangle dinner bell became really popular in the 1800’s for frontier families that were traveling. It was easier to pack and weighed less than more traditional bells. It didn’t matter the type of bell, and it didn’t matter when it rang, it always called the family to return home.

God spoke through the prophet Joel to His people who were scattered across the land in their sinful greed. They had stopped listening to God and his promises because they wanted to do their own thing, in their own way. But God rang the “dinner bell” through his Prophet Joel. This bell wasn’t made of brass or iron, instead it was locusts that got the people’s attention. But the LORD, through Joel, lovingly calls His people home.

“Return to me with all your heart”

Sin separates us from God. We turn our backs on Him and His promises and turn away from Him. Yet he calls us to return to him. “Return to the LORD your God, for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger, and abounding in love.”

Today, the bell is ringing to return to the LORD our God who calls us back to Him where we discover what he gave us… Jesus. And we will do just that tonight- we will return, confess our sins, and feast on God’s promises. We will share the sign of the cross on our forehead in ashes, ashes from palm branches, reminding us that the empty tomb is in sight, but we must first witness the suffering of our Lord Jesus on the cross. God calls you and I, His family, back home to receive the forgiveness he gave us in Jesus.

“Come and get it!”

In the name of Jesus,

Austin

February 28th at 11:45 am

We will discuss adding a budget item that was not contemplated at our December meeting.
The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
