Ditty Bags for Seafarers--donations needed!

This year, the Cathedral community is invited to collect items to be given to seafarers who dock in the Port of Seattle. Our goal is to donate 100 ditty bags to be distributed during the holidays. The Seattle Seafarers’ Center provides about 1,000 of these to merchant seafarers. It is an important part of the pastoral welcome and care for seafarers who are berthed during the holidays. It is a wonderful way to give thanks for these often hidden essential workers, who come from all over the world and are far from their families.

We have the bags, all we need is the contents! Please consider donating:

  • an adult-sized knit hat
  • full size (please no travel size) bottle of shampoo and/or body wash
  • full size toothpaste
  • toothbrush
  • deodorant
  • shaving cream
  • 1-2 razors

All donations can be left in the Cathedral Bookstore anytime between now and December 9. You can also have items shipped to the parish office (attention: Maria). Thank you! Information, Maria Laughlin, 206-382-4284.

Devotio: Seasonal Music of the Common Life

Saturday, December 3 at 8:00pm

Sisters of the Common Life, Brothers of the Common Life: These were terms used in the Middle Ages to refer to religious communities who lived apart from the world. They followed a movement called the Devotio Moderna, a new style of devotion that emphasized individual experience and spiritual fulfillment, and in which music played a crucial role in generating and supporting the piety and emotion needed for adequate faith. The movement led to some of the most inspiring musical creations of the time. Join us as we celebrate the Advent and Christmas seasons by exploring the musical traditions of Devotio in all its aspects.

Tickets ($0-$30) are available online at www.medievalwomenschoir.org or at the Marion/Terry entrance (doors open at 7:30pm).

The Chair: A Documentary

The Archdiocese of Seattle was recently featured in a video series called “The Chair,” celebrating cathedrals, bishops and dioceses throughout the United States. Both Father Ryan and Corinna Laughlin are featured in this 24-minute film, which also includes stunning footage of the Cathedral. It's free to watch but does require creating a free account to access the Seattle episode.

ST VINCENT DE PAUL THANKS YOU A woman raising two daughters on her own was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Unable to work while she went through two brain surgeries, she could not keep up with rent. This neighbor called multiple agencies including the St Vincent de Paul Helpline requesting assistance (206-767-6449). We responded to her request and were able to pay a portion of the rent. The best news is our prayers were answered when a special fund granted money to pay off the woman’s rent balance. Without your help, this ministry would not be possible. Thank you! Information, Jo Ann Wiesner, 206-291-4012 or wiesnerjo@gmail.com.

APPRECIATION FROM THE YAICHENIA – SAFONIK FAMILY In October, we welcomed our sponsored family of six from Ukraine. The mom, Tetiana, shared with the Community Sponsorship Hub, whom St. James sponsored the family through, that the welcome her family has received is beyond what they could have hoped for or dreamt of finding. Tetiana said: “People who I never knew and who probably never heard anything about such country as Ukraine, welcomed us as their family members. What makes them to do such sacrifices? That is beyond my comprehension and their act of kindness is priceless.” During this first month, the Ukrainian Sponsor Circle Team supported the Yaichenia – Safonik family as they settled in at their apartment, started school and ESL tutoring, applied for work authorization and Social Security cards, accessed healthcare and other benefits, navigated public transit, and much more. Information, Erica de Klerk, edeklerk@stjames-cathedral.org or 206-382-4511.
