Library Closings

Our library will be closed on November 10, 2023, in observance of Veterans Day. This day of closure serves as a mark of our deep respect and gratitude for the men and women who have served in the armed forces, safeguarding our freedoms and preserving the values we hold dear. We will resume regular operations on the following day, and we look forward to serving you then. Thank you for your understanding, and please have a meaningful Veterans Day.

In celebration of Thanksgiving Day, our library will be closed on November 23, 2023, and November 24, 2023. This cherished holiday is a time for reflection, gratitude, and togetherness with family and loved ones. We want our staff and patrons to have the opportunity to enjoy this special occasion with their families, and we will resume our regular library hours on the following business day.

We wish everyone a warm and joyful Thanksgiving, filled with good company and the spirit of thankfulness. Thanksgiving, celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November in the United States, has a rich historical background dating back to the early 17th century. Its origins can be traced to the Pilgrims who arrived at Plymouth, Massachusetts, aboard the Mayflower in 1620. In 1621, the Pilgrims and Wampanoag shared a three-day feast to celebrate a successful harvest, which is often considered the first Thanksgiving.

However, Thanksgiving wasn't an annual tradition until much later. In 1863, during the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed Thanksgiving a national holiday, aimed at fostering unity and gratitude during a time of conflict.

Today, Thanksgiving is a time for Americans to gather with friends and family, enjoy a traditional feast featuring turkey, stuffing, and pumpkin pie, and express gratitude for the blessings in their lives. It remains a cherished holiday symbolizing gratitude, community, and the enduring spirit of giving thanks.

The Museum Pass program is accessible to Delaware Library cardholders who are adults (18 years and older).

Visit your local library to borrow a museum pass and enjoy a wonderful, cost-free visit to one of Delaware's captivating museums. Presently, our selection includes passes for Mt. Cuba, Brandywine Zoo, and Tyler Arboretum.

For passes to additional attractions, kindly verify their availability through the Museum Key.

Recipe of the Month: The Bobbie Sandwich

Commonly known as a Capriotti’s sub and also as “Thanksgiving on a roll,” the Bobbie sandwich is named after an aunt of the founders of the Capriotti’s restaurant chain. The aunt’s name was actually Winona, but she hated that name and always just went by “Aunt Bobbie.” Each year in late November, Aunt Bobbie made this recipe for Capriotti’s future founders from Thanksgiving leftovers.

Today, Capriotti’s restaurant has locations throughout the United States. They still slow roast their pulled turkey in-house to achieve the freshest possible flavor for the Bobbie, which has been a local favorite in Wilmington, Delaware, for more than 40 years.

Lego Club

Tuesday November 7 & 21 @ 6:00 PM Tuesday

Join us for Lego Club, suitable for students in grades K-8! We gather on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month at the New Castle Public Library from 6:00 to 7:00pm, where you can unleash your creativity by constructing themed Lego designs alongside your family and friends.

To secure your spot, registration is a must, and all necessary supplies are provided. In the event that it's 15 minutes past the program's scheduled start time and there's available space, we'll prioritize families from the waitlist.

We kindly ask that you register only if you have a firm plan to attend the program. Our programs often have waiting lists, and our goal is to accommodate as many families in our community as possible. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding!

Baby Storytime 10:30 AM Friday

Infant Storytime caters to little ones aged 0-24 months, featuring a delightful blend of songs, tales, and interactive movements tailored specifically for this age range. This Storytime session is designed to be a joyful experience, fostering the connection between caregivers and infants while nurturing the early development of literacy skills.

Rhythm & Rhyme Storytime 10:30 AM Tuesday

R&R Storytime welcomes children aged 2-5 years, offering a program brimming with age-appropriate songs, engaging stories, and interactive movements. We enthusiastically promote learning through play, enhancing the early literacy skills of our young participants by incorporating elements such as stories and egg shakers into the experience.

Squirrel embarks on a colorful autumn journey with Bird to find a missing leaf, uncovering forest mysteries and the nature of change in this enchanting fall tale, complete with vivid art and bonus seasonal insights.

The Busy Tree by Jennifer Ward

Spectacular illustrations rendered in oil paint, and a rhyming text that describes a tree’s activities from its roots to its branches, introduce young readers to the amazing activities that go on in a tree. Acorns nibbled by chipmunks, ants scurrying across a trunk, a spider spinning a web, leaves “breathing out air for all to breathe in”—everything adds up to a “busy tree” for all to “come and see.”

Switch It Up: Video Game Club

Are you a fan of Mario Kart, Super Smash Brothers, or Mario Party? If so, don't miss out on our "Switch it Up: Video Gaming Club" program! We'll supply the Nintendo Switch, sufficient controllers for up to 8 teenagers, the games, and even some snacks for a great gaming experience. This program is specially tailored for students in 7th through 12th grade. Click here to register!

Cake Pop Decorating Workshop

Thursday, November 30th at 5:30 PM

Join us for an exciting cake pop decorating session! Kids and teens, aged 7 to 18, are welcome to be a part of this event where we'll be embellishing cake pops for our Winter Festival and Market's upcoming bake sale. Each participant will receive one cake pop to take home, and the rest will be contributed to the bake sale.

Make sure to visit the Winter Festival and Market on Saturday, December 9th, anytime between 10 am and 4 pm to purchase beautifully decorated cake pops!
