Seasonal Sing-Along

candle-flames-banner.jpg

Dear Washington Waldorf Community,

Come and be with us next weekend on the 10th of December at the Seasonal Sing-Along.

As winter approaches, we seek to overcome the growing cold and darkness with the warmth and light of human connection. The Sing-Along is a time when we come together to enjoy song and share our inner light with each other.

Over many years there have been discussions about our school’s festival life and what it means to our community. Out of a desire to promote inclusivity and diversity, we welcome your recommendations for songs and poems to share at this event that capture your family’s traditions and that bring you joy during this time of year.

These past few weeks, I have had the opportunity to practice the eurythmy seven pointed star with the lower school faculty. I am excited that several of our faculty members will share this as an offering at the Sing-Along. When I think about the performance of the seven pointed star, I am reminded of the importance of human connection, warmth, and light in a way that is unique and powerful. How we work and move together creates the star, and it is our collective light that shines forth, building relationships and community.

I hope your whole family will join us on Saturday, December 10th for this event with singing and other activities that may be new or traditional for this time of year. We will gather at 5pm under the swoop at the front of the school and will share refreshments and song.

If you are interested in providing a recommendation, please share it with us by next Wednesday.

Warm regards,

Lelia True

Waldorf Store Shopping & Holiday Shipping

The Waldorf Store is open this week in the school foyer!

Stop by and peruse the delightful toys, books, handwork kits, handwork items lovingly made by members of our community, and more... The store also includes school spirit wear and our gear shop with outdoor items donated from our community and re-sold at very low prices (proceeds of the gear shop benefit the ONE FUND).

The store will be open at the following times:

  • Thurs, Dec 18-9:15am & 2:30-3:15pm
  • Fri, Dec 28-9:15am & 2:30-3:15pm

The Waldorf Store will also be open for online shopping December 3 through 5pm on December 16. Online purchases will be available for pick up at the school through December 20.

Mail your holiday packages - without standing in line at the Post Office - while supporting WWS.

Here’s a chance to mail your holiday packages, hassle-free, and generate a contribution to WWS. On Dec 1 and 2 from 9:30 to 12:30, Peter Karpoff, WWS Alum Parent, once again will be in the school foyer with mailing boxes, tape, and stamps. You will pay the normal cost of Priority Postage; Peter will contribute 20% of the stamp value to the School.

How is this possible, you ask? Peter has access to hundreds of dollars of unused stamps through the Silver Spring Stamp Club from bequests and consignments. The owners accept less than full value for these stamps and thus the chance for the school to benefit.

So, bring your items to be mailed, with addresses (!), and we will get them to the Post Office. You’ll pay $17 for a Medium box or $22.45 for a Large box for Priority service to US addresses. Lightweight packages (1.5 to 2 lbs.) can be sent for a bit less. Peter will email you a copy of the Post Office receipt with the tracking information. If your contents are not yet ready to mail by Nov. 30, you can come and purchase a box with postage attached and take it to the P.O. yourself when you are ready. Same 20% benefit to WWS. Same opportunity for Holiday cards. Bring them in for 60 cents, and WWS will earn 20% as well (or again, take some stamps home).

Come by tomorrow or Friday to get your mailings underway!

There's Still Time to Win a Bazaar Raffle!

Some of our Bazaar vendors made generous additional donations to our raffles, so we are keeping the drawing open until December 16!

All raffle tickets are $5.

Giving Tuesday

Thank you to all who gave and supported WWS on Giving Tuesday! It was wonderful to see our whole community come together. Everyone from a current 2nd grader, to alums representing a span of classes from 1982 - 2021, to current parents, alum parents, grandparents, faculty, former faculty, and friends supported our school. We are so grateful.

We raised money for both the ONE FUND and the Room to Move campaign to build a gym at our school, and this brought us closer to our goals for both campaigns.

Thank you also to an anonymous donor, who added $100 to all gifts from alums, increasing our impact and reach for the day.

If you didn't have the chance to participate in Giving Tuesday, you can still give to the ONE FUND and the Room to Move Campaign!

Events & Happenings from the Community

Passing of Esther Smith, a Founder of WWS

We want to share with our community about the passing of Esther Smith, a member of the founding group of those who brought Waldorf Education to the DC area through Acorn Hill and the Washington Waldorf School. Esther passed away on Nov 18, 2022 at her home. Her two daughters, Kerry, who attended both schools, and Colleen, who was a teacher at both schools, were with her.

The Christian Community Act of Consecration for the Dead will be celebrated for Esther on Saturday, December 3 at 10:30am at the Christian Community Chapel, 4221 Metzerott Road, College Park, MD 20740.

All are warmly welcome.
