Join Us at Our Annual Polka Mass and Appreciation Dinner!

February 10, 2024

Polka Mass w/ Ray Koncar at 4 pm

Appreciation Dinner to Follow

This week, we started planning in earnest for our Border Town Mass and Appreciation Dinner in February (prior to our Ash Wednesday services and the Season of Lent), we just worked out details with JR's Chicken and Bill & Elina Dimitrious in Joliet (owners of four restaurants in that area), whose staff will also be preparing food for this event. Anyone who volunteers at the parish is invited to join us with their families. All you have to do is RSVP at St. Anne's [(815) 427-8265] or St. Patrick's (815) 472-2864] and you are all set to go - hope to see you there!!! We have included highlights from last year's celebration with this note.

Take a Look at Our Renovated Reliquary used on St. Anne's Day for the last 100+ Years!

Last week, we received a special delivery of the Repaired and Upgraded St. Anne Reliquary that has been used to process with our St. Anne Relic throughout the village of St. Anne for well over 100 years at our little slice of heaven. Because this liturgical vessel was getting wobbly, a priest had "prayers answered" from a long illness and decided to donate the resources necessary to fortify and clean up this beautiful liturgical vessel. What a blessed community we have, and what a wonderful gift this is to the first shrine of the United States!!! (The black and white photo was the procession with this reliquary in the early 1900s.)

Here are the repair details sent to us by Alviti Creations, who took care of the $3,100 project for St. Anne's Church...

Repair & Refinish 26” Monstrance (no luna, no track - BTW... Fr. Pete's comment... the vessel is a Reliquary, not a Monstrance!!!) with oval glass front with red, blue & green faceted stones; set in a teeth-setting with missing teeth with grape vine ring around closed filigree face with large oval red cab stones around node with decorative overlay on top of oval shaped base with 4 feet (2 feet have holes drilled in for bolting down) with extra-large cross with faceted crystal stones & large round red cab stone with large oval medallion attached to cross.

  • Repair massive bent & twisted rays curled in, curled out
  • Repair wobble base straighten overall
  • Remove multi dents on top of base

Thank you to the priest who, by “prayers answered” after venerating the relic of St. Anne, recovered from a concussion injury and donated $3,750 towards this cause!!!

Fr. Pete will be purchasing a Custom-Made Case to preserve this Reliquary (which really needs to be done to make sure the Reliquary does not get damaged like it was), which will cost around $1,000. If you would like to dedicate this case to someone and help us in this cause, please contact the parish office.

Note from Fr. Pete – What Alviti Creations repaired was a Reliquary (which holds the St. Anne Relic brought from France to Quebec to St. Anne, IL), not a Monstrance (which is a vessel which exposes the Most Blessed Sacrament). Thanks to the Poor Clares of the Annunciation Monastery for donating three Monstrances to the Border Town Parishes!!

The Last of the Replacement Gym Windows arrive later today (Wednesday - February 7, 2024). Thanks to Bill Powers and Wally Martin, the latter having completed a great number of projects on both campuses. We are hoping to have these windows installed by the end of the month when the students of Christendom College will be using the gym for part of their mission work.

With this project, the bulk of the interior work of St. Patrick's Academy Gym & Community Center will be completed. By the end of the calendar year, we will hopefully complete the kitchenette on the other side of the gym stage, as well as installing a generator for the gymnasium and internet throughout the St. Patrick's Campus. This will be of great benefit for a church trying to provide an emergency center for the needy and provide internet for those groups such as Kankakee Community College who utilize our campus to teach English as a Second Language.

(By the end of the calendar year, we will have installed generators for ALL the buildings at St. Anne's as well as internet capabilities throughout the campus as well.)

We are speaking with community leaders about creating a parking lot for the gymnasium and paving the back parish parking lot - more on that later.

Thank You from Waterleaf Services

Dear Fr. Pete:

Waterleaf Women's Center thanks you for partnering with us during 2023. Below is a summary of your payments to our organization:

In 2023, St. Anne’s Church collected $809.34 and St. Patrick's Church collected $1,679.00 for Waterleaf Services.

Thank you for your support of our mission. This letter serves as a receipt for your 2023 donation. Except as noted above, no goods or services were received, and your donation is tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law. Waterleaf Women's Center is a 501(c)(3) organization.

With Gratitude from your Waterleaf Team

Note: We continue to offer the “Baby Bottles for Life” fundraiser for Waterleaf Services through the end of February. Please fill your bottles with change and return the bottles to church at the end of the month. Thank you so much for supporting this important “Right to Life” cause!!!

Thank You from the St. Anne's & Momence Food Pantries

Both the Momence & St. Anne Food Pantry are nonprofit organizations that provide food to the residents of the communities. There are no income requirements and all that are in need are welcome.

Donations are important to our success and Father Pete has been a blessing to our food pantry. We cannot express enough how grateful we are for his generosity. We are not funded by the government and operate solely by the contributions of others and our faith in God that He will always provide for us.

At this time, we are requesting donations from your organization for future distributions. Some of the items that Father Pete has provided in the past are chips, salami, bottles of water and other food items. These items and any other additional ones you are able to donate, are appreciated and welcomed to our pantry.

We would like to thank you for the donations you have given in the past. Support from people like you allows us to continue our work in St. Anne and Momence. Please do not hesitate to ask any questions you may have.

CHRISTENDOM COLLEGE COMES TO THE BORDER TOWN!

Somed time ago, one of our generous benefactors provided an opportunity for us to sponsor seventeen students and chaperones from Christendom College in Royal, Virginia so they could do mission work in our area. The goal here is for the students to learn a bit about the rural ministry and the migrant setting that our communities embrace, allowing our parishes to grow in the process. Outside of transportation and travel, the cost of this mission will run over $10,000 - all of which has been subsidized by this generous benefactor.

We are very much indebted to Tim Cook (Director of Missions and Dean of Students for the College) and Ema Elvir (our Secretary ESPECTACULAR!) for coordinating all the details. I also wish to thank those groups in our parish cooking meals for the students and sharing what types of ministry they offer to these students from the east coast.

During this eight-day experience from March 2-9, the students at the college will live and pray with us and will engage in all kinds of activities throughout the area. These activities include, but are not limited to the following...

  • A visit with Maggie Rivera and the Illinois Migrant Council, who will take these students on a pilgrimage to farms in the area who assist the Migrant Council with their good work.
  • Painting St. Anne Gym & Meeting Room and learning about the Food Pantries in the area.
  • Spending a day at Bishop McNamara School, learning about their good work in the region and celebrating Mass / spending the day with this community.
  • Taking a retreat day with Ana & Eileen Rivas and the staff of the Camino y Esperanza Retreat House in St. Anne, IL.
  • Spending time with the staff of Harbor House, learning about how we take care of families in need within Kankakee County.
  • Celebrating Mass, having lunch and ministering to the residents of Good Shepherd Manor, thanks to the leadership of Brother Alphonsus Brown.
  • Touring Hopkins Park and meeting the residents from the area.
  • Learning about the good work of local Knights of Columbus organization and helping serve at the Fish Fry on March 8.

We are blessed to even be considered for this type of experience! To learn a little more about what they will do, I recorded a homily for the Baptism of the Lord speaking directly on this topic. You can watch the homily if you CLICK HERE!!!

Mass for the Sixth

Sunday in Ordinary Time

Celebrated at St. Patrick's Church - Momence, IL

On the Parish Appreciation Weekend, Fr. Pete speaks about so many good souls at the Border Town (some who are recognized and many who are not) who give their hearts to the God and parish that they love. Fr. Pete mentions the life of Bob Doszak (1946-2023) whose musical spirit touched the hearts of so many good souls throughout the country.

Mass for Ash Wednesday

Celebrated at St. Anne's Church - St. Anne, IL

Referencing the Signs, Symbols and Rituals utilized in the Catholic Church throughout the Liturgical Year, Fr. Pete focuses on the importance of blessing ashes made from the palms used from the previous year's Passion Sunday Mass and the importance of the liturgical colors violet, rose and black that often are worn during the Season of Lent.

UPCOMING PROJECTS AT ST. PATRICK'S

WE HAVE REDUCED OUR PARISH DEBT AT ST. PATRICK'S BY A FACTOR OF OVER $200,000 IN THE LAST TWO YEARS!!!

One of our seniors has taken it upon themself to take courses on writing grants. The US Government offers millions of dollars of grants that are accessible for those who apply for them. Since both parish halls are seen as "Community and Emergency Centers" by our respective cities, we need help in getting generators and internet on our properties to help the cities... and us!!! ... in our efforts to serve the people of our area.
