New Public Health AmeriCorps Program Comes to Zufall Health
We're excited to welcome our first-ever class of Public Health AmeriCorps members this year. Since 2013, Zufall has recruited over 75 members of AmeriCorps, a federal agency that engages 70,000-plus Americans annually in intensive service projects to meet community needs. Zufall Public Health AmeriCorps volunteers will commit to an 11-month term focusing on: health equity and the social determinants of health; COVID testing and vaccination support; access to services and reducing barriers to care; nutrition and exercise education for youth; and management of chronic diseases. Rippel Foundation Grant to Support Zufall's COVID Services This Year
Zufall is grateful for a gift of $25,000 from the Rippel Foundation, a national foundation focused on health system transformation and based in Morristown. The grant will fund COVID testing, vaccines, and access to treatments, including the delivery of antiviral medication for patients who test positive and are at high risk of developing severe disease. Despite the easing of restrictions, the virus is still a serious threat and Zufall's patient population continues to experience disproportionate harm.

Meet Your Provider: Sarah Aleman, MSW, LCSW
Pursuing a career in social work was an easy choice for Zufall's Director of Behavioral Health, Sarah Aleman, MSW, LCSW, who says that "connecting, serving, and giving" are integral to her character. Aleman oversees a 19-member staff supporting patients with issues like stress management, bereavement, pain, depression, and anxiety. Now with Zufall for 12 years, she is working on furthering the integration of physical and behavioral health care and expanding same-day access to counseling services for medical patients needing intervention.

Zufall Video Explores New Jersey's Black Maternal Health Crisis
In April, we recognized Black Maternal Health Awareness Week with the release of a short video about disparities in maternal mortality rates in New Jersey. It is unacceptable that Black mothers are significantly more likely to die in childbirth than mothers of other races. Two medical providers and two Zufall Health patients, all Black women, discuss how inequity and racism drive these unacceptable outcomes and make recommendations for safer prenatal and postpartum care.

Why We Celebrate Pride
June is LGBTQ+ Pride Month. At Zufall Health, we are celebrating LGBTQ+ communities and advances in their civil rights. Still, a lot of work remains to create a more inclusive society for everyone, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. Zufall is proud to be a part of that important work as we provide LGBTQ+ patients with health care that is affordable, accessible, and stigma free in a welcoming, safe, and respectful environment.
